Rail crack ding

Hi. I’ve repaired a 5 inch zig zag crack along the very rail edge under the backfoot, on a 5’11. Since only a small portion of the crack needed to be opened a bit, and filled, I chose to just rough’n up the ding, and area around. Then I put and extra piece of cloth over the filling area, filled it up with resing, and glassed the whole ding with one layer, with a piece of cloth 1 inch larger than the ding in all directions. Sanded the edges and hotcoated(the cloth and more). I had to work A LOT to sand the rail smooth without sanding away the cloth. Should I’ve filled the crack with resin/fiberchop instead? Or should I’ve sanded down the whole area more to fit the cloth so I did’nt have to sand it down. I thought the cloth peice would keep extra stength to the rail, but now I’m not so sure… A short answer will do. Thank’s guys. J

YEAH ANYTIME YOU ADD A SURFACE LAYER OF GLASS IT’S GOING TO BE A BUMP THERE. UNLESS THERE IS GOING TO BE DIRECT PRESSURE ON THE DAMAGE FROM YOUR RIDING FOOT OR HANDS DON’T USE GLASS OVER THE TOP, INSTEAD OPEN IT UP(DREMEL TOOL, EXACTO BLADE,ETC) AND SCRAP AWAY THE FOAM TO ALLOW A BOND INSIDE AND UNDER THE GLASS (I USE A DENTAL PICK)(MAYBE 1/8") TO HOLD THE MESS TOGETHER. A TOUCH OF WHITE PIGMENT FOR LOOKS. DON’T NEED FIBERGLASS UNLESS YOU STAND ON THE DAMAGE, SERIOUSLY I DO THIS ALL THE TIME SINCE 1970. THIS WAY YOU HAVE FILLED THE DAMAGE AS WELL AS GRIPPED THE UNDERSIDE AND OVERSIDE WITH RESIN THEN SAND THE MASKING TAPE OUTLINED DAMAGE AREA TO BLEND. MAKE SENSE?

Yep thanks, that’s what I wanted to know. I realised I was far out and sanded most of it down on the smaller cracks. Don’t know with the big crack, the glassing on the board is crap so it was really soft (no delam) in the surrounding area, figured I had to keep the cloth there, else it’d go straigh away. Cheers J
