I’ve heard of people making tools that can cut laps and function like a rail marking tool. I came upon a free old mortise gauge and I’m not above hacking it up to make one to cut laps. I’d love too hear some ideas or see other peoples tools!

Angus,
though it sounds like a great idea,
it does’nt work that well.
A vertical cut with a razor blade just cuts a big groove in the foam.
Causes air bubbles and a dark line on tints.
Ever seen a really nice cut lap on a good tint job that is so clean it does’nt need a pinline?
It was probably cut with the blade held horizontal.
I’m not saying it can’t be done.
I’ve just been doing this surfboard thing (professionally) along time.
Short-cuts alwaye seem to backfire somehow.
wasnt looking for a short cut. Ive been down that road, and one huge air bubble later, a snapped board, and a broken leg, ive learned short cuts dont fly if you want too make nice boards. Ive heard about people making those tools before hand and thought it would be a good addition to my tool box.
Yesterday was my first cut lap board. Im thinking about picking up a heat gun and die grinder after just one experience, yes it was that bad
An old timer told me about using something similar to a leather strip cutter to cut rail laps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCUU7bbHvdY. I just use a razor and tape.
