Rail Repair...

After reading these forums for a while I finally decided to register and post up a topic. I have fixed tons of boards before for myself and other people but I just want a few of your opinions on the best way to repair rails. Pretty much a grind down the affected area and get rid of all delamed glass etc. Then I sand it down and rinse it out wish fresh water a few times and let it completely dry for a week or so. After that I mask off the area and laminate a piece of 4oz glass over the ding, then after that dries I sand off the stray edges of the glass around the ding and hotcoat over it. Finally I do the finish sanding and wetsanding. How does that sound and is there anything else that I should be doing to make my rail repairs and better/easier to do? Thanks alot!

I’d not bother with washing it. Just sand/grind and dry.

Most board’s rails are at least 2 layers of 4 oz, so you should use at least that much.

just to amplify Lee’s answer-

I wouldn’t bother washing the ding unless some joker had surfed it for most of a day after dinging it. Though you do want to make sure it’s good and dry and remove any foreign objects like sand, seaweed and body parts. If you save enough of the original glass ( with, for instance, airbrush color) , even if it’s a little beat up, and fill fairly well behind it, the little bit of visible filler is visually acceptable, more than an attempt to match the color in either filler or new glass.

hope that’s of use
