I would really love comments/suggestion regarding my latest fin. basically, does it look like an effective shape / is the color good?
Just so you know, the entire fin, all materials included cost me under $10.

I love it! The white almost makes it invisible!
sorry bout that… still having trouble w/ the really confusing “inline” function… is that better?
What’s it made of? Is it glassed?
Bro,
Please check my post on page 2 “A couple fins you might like”…and then PM me…!
Looks like a standard shape, can’t see the foiling, so dunno bout that, I think when I made thruster fins they are about $5-6 a fin made of fiberglass or epoxy/glass.
ya the fin is glassed, its made of wood encased in a thin layer of 4 oz glass. check my other post “Make Great Fins Cheap and Easy!” it explains the process
the shape is basically a G-5 thruster from FCS that I modified.
Basswood is rated as 700 times less stiff than fiberglass. I suspect that someone who knows how stiff fins need to be could tell the difference between your sample and a glass fin.
That being said, there is a cure. You’d need to use about 5-6 layers of 6 oz glass to make it solid like a glass fin, or at least 3 layers to get it acceptable. Back when wood fins were the norm (early 60s), the wood would be glassed with 2 layers of 10 ounce Volan glass on each side, and then the fin edge would be made of glassed fin roving. The roving edge prevented exposure of the wood on small bumps that typically occur on the edge of the fin.
There’s a great tutorial in the archives from Bert Burger on making wood and glass fins. But it takes a bit more than shaping a piece of wood and slapping a layer of 4 ounce on each side. Keep at it though, it’ll get better fast.
Thanks for the advice ill look into it… but one thing making cost of my fins low is that I got free fiberglass from a boat manufacturer. my friends dad gives me free scraps so ill add more glass. as far as strength goes, when you apply bass wood layers and alternate the grain, strength becomes an exponential factor. and i use architectural grade bass wood. not that cheap crap you get in hobby stores.
