I have done this before, with good results. Not saying I recommend it, just saying I've done it. Glassing over the paint worked fine, hot coating not so good, had problems with fish eyes when I tried that.
hahaha, thanks for the responses guys…
My goal is to put paint on the rails but, I don’t have a compressor any more and want to use rattle cans 'cause they’re easy and there are a bunch of colors… But, I’d like to protect the paint… I’m thinking paint on the hotcoat then a coat of UPOL is probably my best bet.
I’ve got enough bugs to work out without adding to the mess. =)
Taping for paint on Lam. You have to sand the lam first. If you are doing a pinline say for a sanded finish. A little paste of sanding resin on the rail then sand, paint and lam. I mean we tape off for color lam all the time. Its all about a little prep. Fish eyes are a mystery sometimes. Its always a challenge but less with epoxy.
I wouldn’t do it. Last Year I built a 10’ SUP with EPS & epoxy. I wanted color throughout and pigmented my layup and used Innegra cloth. The Innegra didn’t take the color well so I tried cleaning up the rails with Krylon epoxy before the hot coat.BIG Mistake.Hot coat wouldn’t “take” well and I ended up with multiple fish-eyes along the rails & tail. I ended up hot coating (and then sanding off) three times because of the fish eyes.In hindsight, I think the paint soaked in just enough to contaminate the layup and not allow the hot coat to bond properly.Just because the paint is epoxy doesn’t mean that it’s an exact chemical match to your resin. Good Luck with whatever you decide.
