Razor Blade Tricks?

I read it on Swaylock's.com.

I did not understand it. I saw it again and again. I still did not get it.

"Run the razor blade down the tape line". What are these people talking about?.....Well,..my buddy walked me through the process......

Oh yeah.....I get it now......Duuha.....A photo is worth a 1000 words....

Have you ever mixed red tint with blue pigment and layed that over a low grade EPS blank that you got for Free...with S cloth?

Perfect! I just saw a Led Zep tribute band the other night and "Jimmy Page" did some weird shit with his guitar and one of those things.

You guys have got nothing on me, i can cut my facial hair with my resin bead scraper!!

...

The best razor blade trick I've seen is the 'Telekinetic Razor Technique' as perfected by Lee Vanderhurst.

"Look Ma... No hands!!!"

A tweak for those of us who aren’t telekinetics

When I’m using a razor blade to cut at the tapeline (as Lee is doing in the above shot)  I bend the razor blade into an ‘L’ shape.

It seems to provide much better grip, straighter cuts, and faster speeds.

No pix :frowning:  but hopefully it’s a simple tweak some might find useful…

I don’t understand what I’m looking at…are you scraping?

Hi Etmo -

I've tried doing that and the blade just snaps.  Do you heat it or anything before bending?

Ray, For me running the razor blade over the tape line, doesn’t mean that at all, but I guess it can.  That is scraping the bead, and always use two hands for precise razor control.  I think of sealing the edge of the tape to prevent resin or paint seepage with the edge of the blade because one can easily apply a precise even pressure, that one just can’t get with a finger.  It makes for tighter color work.  I would share some more, but some around here are not worthy of my knowledge; perhaps or maybe some others know and can add to the mystical cabal.  The haters can’t handle a guy giving out good information without bringing attention himself.  And John the old US made blades bend and don’t snap:  Chinese razorblades suck, and are dangerous, and are an inferior product.  Hey what I great metaphor for everything bad coming out of China; My friend Byron already came up with it though, and is looking for funding for a movie.  He said: “Everyone thinks your a know it all”, and “Don’t teach the monkeys anything”, “Just take the money of the table”.  He is a whole lot sharper than a Chinese razorblade.  Another good one he came up with is “Its like putting lipstick on a pig.”  I tell him everyone thinks he’s a a$$hole, but he really isn’t.

Hi ghettorat -

Made in USA razor blades.  Got it.  I reckon I've never had a single blade made in the USA since literally all of them I've used over a period of almost 40 years have been prone to snappage.

Also - For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Ray was just trying to make a funny with this thread.  I guarantee he knows perfectly well how to cut a lap.

Ghetto, I would love to find the blades that you're refering to; I have tried to bend every brand I come across and they all snap! I even went to a body shop supply house to see if they could help me. I bet you can guess the stupid look they gave me! Any help on the actual brand name?

Yo John,

Ray is talking about the resin line or bead that forms from taping off the rails.  Keith just showed me that trick a few months ago.  Pretty snappy!  You just hold the blade at right angles to the bead and scrape back and forth.  Pretty sweet except for the sound.  Kinda like finger nails and chalkboards...Bet the trick is pretty old.

Ok I just looked on the package “American Line”, but their made in Mexico!  And guess what I bent a nice curve to 90 degrees.  Here is the secret: don’t take the paper off or you might end up with a broken blade in your finger.  The late great Honolua, Sunset, Hanalei legend, Paul McKinney taught me that trick. He used it to clean up ding repairs along the edges while the resin was b-stage.  Kokua can tell you all about Paul.

Scraping the bead off and then surfing the board has been called: “Hawaiian style rubout” for a long tme.

Hi John,

Definitely never heated any razor blades.  Maybe the heat from my thumbs warms the metal, but I’m not holding the blade over a bunsen burner or anything.

I just use the ones they sell at Fiberglass Supply, they’re made in the USA.  Here’s the pic:

Thanks Ghettorat!

Howzit ghetto, By the time Paul got to Kauai he was pretty much gone from drugs and alcohol and wasn't even surfing but he did some repair work but I heard it was terrible. I guess the alocohol ahd finally done it damae because he would just sit and talk to himself or walk up to people and start babbleing about the strangest things. It was a shame to see how he had gone from a really good surfer and repair guy to a complete basket case. He did get off the booze but thenmoved to Oahu and we knw what happened to him there. RIP Paul. Aloha,Kokua

Howzit John, I love using razor blades and just take it slow and leave the paper on lie ghetto said, plus they will break after so much bending. I like to bend them when cutting a taped off glass job since you can cut on an angle which doesn't leave such a square edge. The first time Ishowed the razor bending trick to a friend he was amazed and I just laughed and told him to try it. Aloha,Kokua

Well....

Did I ever misinterpret Ray's original pics.  Disregard my post insinuating he was trying to be funny.  As they say - "Never mind."
