How would a board react if it had hard rails all the way to the nose? Would it affect the paddling speed; take-off ability; down the line speed? I am curious of the effects for each variable. Would this type of board be good for any particular wave type? Or would it be worthless? Thanks guys, Magoo
i have a 7’10 single fin funboard with hard rails all the way up to the nose and i absolutely love it. its fast, paddles well. everything about the board is great.>>> How would a board react if it had hard rails all the way to the nose? > Would it affect the paddling speed; take-off ability; down the line speed? > I am curious of the effects for each variable. Thanks Steve, I’m gonna have to keep an eye out for you at Blackies – maybe you can show me that stick. Do you find that the rails are easily buried and does that hinder power moves? Magoo
you surf blackies too? niiice, what kind of board do you usually ride? im out there almost every day, usually on a yellow longboard, and i drive that white rambler you may have seen in the parking lot. anyway, i’ll start bringing that 7’10 down so you can check it out. its a great board, i rarely catch rails on it, but as far as power moves go… i dont usually do that kind of stuff. its a great board for lots of down the line speed with a few off the lips or turns. ill let you try it out when i see you down there. -steve

My feeling on this is that hard rails up to the nose increases a boards planing quality – but also makes it more susceptible to chop. If the conditions are clean it has a very positive (ie. responsive and quick) turning quality. Mike
Sway- I had an early modern downrail longboard shaped by Donald T. in 1985 (70/30 rails were his description). On glassy, lined up walls that board was tits! (sorry Leslie), the next board I got I eased up a bit on the rails and found it to be a little more forgiving day in and day out. If you get the rocker just right with the right rail treatment, ain’t no betta in quality surf. TS.>>> Magoo, My 7’4" lopez in the archive has hard rails all the way to the > nose. It seems nice, I’d love to try that on the 7’6" balsa egg I plan on shaping this coming spring. How do these hard rails look like in middle and nose sections ? Are they down rails or rolled under ? Boxy rails or low volume ? Pierre
the board has down rail syndrome, no tucked edges, with full volume carried out to them. i took some measurements the other day, here we go. length: 7’10, nose: 16.5", width: 22.75", tail: 14.75", 3.125" thick, 3.25 nose rocker, 3.5 tail rocker, beak nose, round tail, thick under chest area and slightly foiled out to the tail. slight concave from nose to about 1/3 back, going to flat, with a rolled vee in the tail, with a 9.5" single fin.>>> It seems nice, I’d love to try that on the 7’6" balsa egg I plan on > shaping this coming spring. Many thanks Steve, by the way any tips on laminating hard rails (this will be the first time I’ll laminate myself). Pierre
