Volume calculation. Why would I use this design software? It allows complete control of design & changes to the design making it more efficient. Digitizing is not efficient, but is an option with this set up. For those who have existing scans you can use them on this system. On this machine, once your design is complete, which you can input yourself or with the help of 3D, a 6 foot board takes about 7 minutes a side. The machine is capable of over 1000 inches per minute. If you go to the JCHawaii site you will see a picture of this machine. Jon Carper has one in Hawaii and CA. There is also one at Hobie’s in Dana Point, I saw that one and was amazed at the quality of boards, and at Basham Surf Center in San Clemente. I think McTavish is using one of these machines and I heard that John Yow, owner/designer, just took a machine to Thailand for Cobra International. Complete hand shaping will never go away…I believe everyone should have the experience of shaping and glassing at least once. There is nothing like the feel, smell and final satisfaction of producing a “child” with hopes that your personal magic will be instilled from your efforts. Probably though, those who are in production will opt for a little help from technology. Don’t be too harsh on these shapers. Even if they haven’t spent hours hand shaping, they have designed the board and finished it and the board is worthy of their name. Hats off to us all.” Another post from surflab and surfermag Design Forum on other profile machines. “blakestah, none of the big guys own a machine, let me give you a bit of a rundown I COULD BE WRONG but I’m pretty sure its like so Merrick uses kkl, lost uses kkl and foamworks, rusty uses foamworks and kkl as well stewart uses the machine in san pedro. Takyama uses kkl I believe and the machine at walker foam. Heres a rundown of the machines I know of locally the machines 1.KKL carlsbad,ca= built and developed to be a service owned by KKL a group made of bill bahne and some others has the largest customer base and 3 locations 2.Foamworks Hb, Ca= Built and owned by Jensen for his boards but primarily as a business its not even in his own factory. His was on a loan I’m pretty sure and pays it off with what he charges to mill. 3.Walker Wilmington, Ca built by the blank company walker on loan. Used as a service to compete with Clark Foam. Shapers can get their blanks done on site kind of skips the middleman 4.SBG southbay glassing/ Roland Surfboards- This guy gets money from somewhere where I do not know he sends lots overseas so I’m not sure who bankrolled this one and I’m not sure of the quality of the machine 5.Wayne Okamoto-Redondo Beach, Ca Aside from his own and some other small guys I don’t know much about waynes program, I’m supposed to check it out as soon as we get settled since we need to run a machine. 6. I am pretty sure there is a machine in San Clemente but who is running on it I’m not sure. 7.The poster JEFF WELLS has some type of machine as well its not as complex as the kkl from what I know but any other info is his to give you as I am unfamiliar.” Is there anyone else out there who has information on the shaping machine that produced the BASE profiles that james B saw?
