Re-entry

What design aspects are most curcial to re-entry? is it the same as
planing and your original entry? I made my third board and really like
how quick it turns, but I am debating on my rails.I have to really
feather it to trim and once you give a nice turn on it, you have to
feather it again to trim. It just doesn’t like to trim easily. I really like it as it is, but would like to
try and get a little more glide out of it. Maybe take out the wing/bumps?

It currently has very
soft rails until about 18" from tail. I would say more like 60/40 rails
forward. It is 6’X21"x2 5/8. I glassed it 6oz deck and 4oz bottom with V
24" from tail and out the back. It has about 1/8" v at deepest part
(18" from tail). It is a diamond tail and the points are about 11" apart
and 3" from tail. I’m currently using a quad setup and have used the
speeddialer fins/ Schmintar quad / Simon A quad set / and mixed matched
in between. Almost all fin combo’s work, but the Speeddialer and
Schmintar setup going the best. Here is the board. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. This pic is not the finished product, just the outline. I can post better pics the evening.

Hi -

Not sure what you mean by 'feathering' to trim.

Without knowing your exact fin layout, one hunch is excessive toe-in.  More parallel fins might trim better?

Are your fins foiled aysmmetrically I.E. flat inside?  Maybe 80/20 foils or fatter/blunter leading edges would help.

by feathering, I mean I have to really set for trim and keep it on rail. Almost like I have to baby it to trim, any light diviation and its losing its line. I have the front fins flat foiled inside and they are toed in 1/4. They are 11" from tail. The rears are 1/8 toe and 6" from tail ( I think, I’ll have to measure again when I get home). The rears are double foiled with the Speeddialers and single with the schmintars. All Futures boxes.

Do you bear down on your front foot while turning, snowboard-style? It looks like a front-foot-friendly design?

What are the bottom contours, and do you have a pic of the rocker?

I know bigger based fins would lock you in better but maybe more track than you want – have you tried single foiled rears? Oh – edit – sorry – you said you were using some single-foil rears – how about fins with bigger bases? Does the thing have any concave in the tail?

Yes I have a more front footed style, and it goes great using my back foot as well. Actually that’s where I’m getting the nice quick turns from. I wanted a board that would work both ways. A nice gliding trim as well as quick pivots. That is why I put those bump/wings in.  I used a USBlanks 6’2"a and didn’t alter the rocker much. There is no concave in it at all, just v and it is very slight out the back. As far as the bigger bases, I think the setup that had the most hold were the Simon A quad set, but it still didn’t glide well. I’m thinking about a wider tail in the next one as well as harder rails. I only have construction photos right now. I can post up some new ones later.
