Re: Longboard spec ?'s

I’ve started talking to local shapers about making me a new longboard. I wanting a 9’6" with a 19" nose, 23" wide, 16" tail with parrell egg rails flowing into a hard edge tail. As I live in Fla. I’m wanting to keep the rocker something like 2"-2 1/2" in the nose, a nice almost flat midsection, and a nice kick tail flip @ 4"-5".

I’m 6’2" 180pounds

Do these #'s sound good for a Fla longboard?

Which blank do you guy recommend? I’m thinking the 9’10"H or 10’1"Y or the 10’3" LB blank

Now to glassing the board. As I want a strong board and not caring about weight so much. Should I ask for 6+6 top W/ 6+4 bottom glossed or could I go 6+6+4 top w/ 6+6 bottom and no gloss?

I ride epoxy skimmers. All of them with epoxy gloss coats have at one point started to peel off the glass. So, if I would choose a epoxy layup would that effect the answer about glossing the board?

Does gloss really add strength?

I reposted these questions because I didn’t get any answers to the questions, but got over 100 views. Sol and I had a little conversation, but that was it.

C’mon guys.

OK my 2 cents worth.

I would recommend the 10’1"Y, it’s a great blank.

Go for classic weight foam and a decent sized stringer.

W/ that foam, triple glass deck is overkill, but 6+4 with a knee patch is good.

Gloss on longboard, yes. Doesn’t add strength but looks and watertight.

But make the board yourself!

No, fins are not overrated.

I’m with Keith in that you should take a stab at it yourself–it sounds like you have a good idea about what you want, and this is a great place to start!

If that’s not your bag, I suggest taking the planshape numbers you have to a local shaper, and letting him carve out the rest. If you bring him too much info (design-wise), he may not be able to do his thang.

Trust me guys I’m up for making this board myself. I have two things that are putting this on hold and making me want to pay someone to build it for me.

  1. I’m still not finnished building my boat. 16’, hand layed out from blue prints, circlur and jig saw cut out of Meranti marine plywood, hand glassed w/ epoxy and 18 oz biax. Sanding of fairing, primeing and painting are still needed.

  2. I no longer have a garage to set up lights and collect foam shavings. Tring to figure out how to do this outside and be able to clean up the mess afterwards.

Besides these minor hold backs. I’d be making racks, ordering the blank and everything else. As I’m perfect for building my own boards. I love building stuff.

Maybe I’ll hold off a little longer as I have a nice Lb to ride for now.
