Really bad mistake

Hi guys, I am new to this forum. I am refurbishing an old board, and made a bad/rookie mistake. I cleaned up the track pad glue with acetone and did not notice the pin-sized hole on the rail… result is… an empty shell (see photo). Can this be fixed? I thought of using expanding spray insulation, but trials say it is way too soft even when hardened. Man… the goal was to give the board a second life… not send it to the junkyard.

Thanks

There is an expanding foam that locktite just put on the market and it seemed like very tough stuff - it’s a nice white color too. -  havnt used it yet so take with a grain of salt.

The only down side to an expanding foam in there is that it could blow it up and cause more damage.

Sorry, I am laughing with you not at you.

This looks like something I would do.

I would cut the top off. Glue in foam shaped to fit. Glass and go

No offense taken… I am laughing at myself too.

I was hoping I could avoid what you are suggesting… But I guess I’ll have to go in with the heavy artillery.

I did a quick search and couldn’t find it… do you have more info on the product? Thanks

In any cases, whatever I do with it, it can’t be worst than what was done to the poor thing before… I have a diy friend that would probably perform brain surgery on his kids without medical training… you guys shoul hava a good laugh at this

You can try expanding pu glue instead of expanded pu foam, it expanded less, ended harder. Or If You find You can use epoxy foam resin, ended hard foam

Cut the section out. Glue a block in. Reshape and reglass.

It’s a pity it involves a plug but that’s the way you learn to Not redo rookie mistakes.

Win or lose, you always learn, hopefully.

Here is what you want.  Get the 4#.  That’s basically what a poly surfboard is made of to begin with.

For whatever reason the sways forum won’t let the link work.  Just google US Composites or type the above link in your browser.

Since acetone melted the foam, isn’t that a good sign that the board’s foam is EPS?

If so, then you’ll want to use use epoxy resin for the repair along with fiberglass and added foam.

I’ll add that you wouldn’t want to make a hole and pour the foam in.  The foam would expand and blow the glass out.  You would need to open the damaged area completely up, pour your foam, shape and then re glass.

Thanks for the tips guys… yes the board is EPS

I was hoping for an easy quick fix, but I ended up going the old-fashion way… it was actually pretty superficial.

The boy will live, and will have an extra scar to impress the lady boards in the line-up

Cheers

I would listen to mako. That is genarlly what I would do to some thing like this. Post some pics when your done please.

Be sure to mask off beyond the edge of the new foam, so that when you patch that the glass overlaps the edge of the patch.

That’s just a little something I do… I sand the foam 1/64’’ lower than the glass, glass only the patch, then glass on top with overlap. It gives a little extra room when sanding.
