Recent Feedback on Aquatech Glassing in LA Please

I finally bit the bullet and shaped my first board!!  6'4" by 19 3/4 by 2 3/4, from a US Blanks 6'6" EA blank.  All in all, the process wasn't too hard, and I am very happy with the finished product.  Now it's time to glass it, and I know for sure (after much work with fiberglass in a past life) that I'd rather pay someone to do it.

Aquatech Glassing in Marina Del Rey is closest to me.  I've read some less than happy posts about dealing with them, but I've also gotten lots of positive references.  Anyone used them in the recent past?  I'm going with a basic sand finish, no color, standard PU blank.  Quad fin setup with FCS boxes.  If you could also tell me what I might expect to pay, I'll owe you a beer too...

Thanks!

Dominic

Ehemmm, well, ok.

How about Aloha Glassing in Westminster?

If you want to drive come see us:

CLEAR WATER GLASSING

1835 Whitter Avenue - UNIT A7

Costa Mesa, CA 92627

The turn around is fast and shortboard clears with FCS or Futures fin system is $175.00 for Clear.

EPOXY is $250.00 - Everyone is welcomed. CNC Scanning, Cutting, Shaping, Glassing, Custom Orders. Complete Board or build your own!

We do a lot of cut lap color work with volan and build custom glass on fins if you need artboards or retros.

JEFF BIGGS does good work and is in Torance Beach I think? He has a small well ran shop and is quaility minded.

They get the job done…just don’t look too close at the results. Is it really that hard to cut a volan lap?

Thanks Surfding.  I'll be stopping by today or Monday (unless you guys are there tomorrow).  I have a little finish sanding left to do, about 30 mins worth, and I need to mark the fin box locations.

Dominic

No Problem I will at the shop most of the day. I can help you with your fin placements if you like?

The guys at Clear Water are legit…super clean work.

There’s a killer taqueria right around the corner from his place El Toro Bravo at 19th and Wallace…look for the line of people in the southwest corner of that plaza…LEGIT.

Hacking not allowed!

I had one experience with Aquatech

I brought in a board to be copied.  When it was done, it was two inches longer, 1/8 thicker, different rocker, different stringer, and they forgot the double wings.  Oh it was also 1 1/2 pounds heavier!

When I complaned to Scot, he said this is your board…  couldn’t care less.  I’d stay away.

Cool, I will take you up on that.  I am hemming on possibly going thruster right now.  I'm also having a bit of a tough time with finish sanding...

I'll be by on Monday.  Should I ask for Surfding when I get there?

This place as good tscos on the way down 19th:

Ask for Ray Promer he will take care of you!

Tell him Surfding Sent you.

I dropped the blank off with Ray this afternoon.  He was extraordinarily helpful!  He marked my fin locations, helped plane my stringer a bit, and even gave me some pointers for working with the planer.  Despite my best efforts with my flourescent light banks in the garage, the lights in the shaping bay revealed some undulations I hadn't spotted.  A little more clean up sanding before glassing will be needed to make me look like I halfway knew what I was doing.  :-)

Glad you stopped by. We like to help everyone we can. No mental trips.

I have a few board to shape tomorrow so I will check out your board in the morning.

Ray is super easy going and he will take good care of you.

Kind regards,

Thanks much!  I have to admit I was a little intimidated taking my scraggly-looking garage shape into a pro outfit for review, but Ray was very kind and gracious.  I'll be bringing board #2 in to you guys soon enough as well, hopefully looking better.  Customer service like yours is the deal-maker for me.

Jeff Biggs does good work! I have been riding his boards for several years now and never a problem.
