We’ve been quitely working away at developing the Next Generation evolution of Red X fins. What I’ve come up with is an NACA computer generated 80/20 foil for our X-2 template. I’ve also changed the material to a stiffer lighter material and a low friction surface finish.
Shown below is the inside surface of Next Generation X-2 vs. the original X-2
Here’s a shot of the root cord shape comparison. Yes, I switched sides…
And finally the outer surfaces…And, I switched them back
I just got my first few waves on them this morning. The waves were tiny. I surfed in front of an exposed reef just to get something longer than a shore break. But, there really wasn’t enough power to get a good idea of anything other than they are very low drag. Anyone interested in testing them e-mail me at
tom@daumtooling.com. We’ll start marketing them around the start of the year.
if you did a foil like that to your range of templates and the fin was light enough …
id say i would become a red x user … i would come up with a way of making the boxes work in my boards , just so i could get my hands on foils like that without having to make them …
They weigh less than our original X-2s and the foil is controlled by the cord length. So, at the base they have a relatively thick .385" max t, they are significantly thinner at the tip than our original X-2. They are also stiffer. Basically, I’m pretty amazed at how nice these fins came out. You always plan to make improvements. But, until the finished product is in your hand it’s hard to tell.
And, yes utilmately we will be doing similar foiling techniques with our most popular original templates. But, we also have a few new other new tricks brewing.
