Remember this Yater?

I’m curious if any of you remember seeing this shape around, or maybe even riding it? I bought it at the Mavericks surf shop opening where people were swapping boards. I purchased it for $60 and it’s by far the best board I’ve ever ridden. Anyway, I was thinking of replicating it for my first shape. Seems pretty simple with mellow curves, except the tail. Around what year did this board come out? What were some other similar shapes from this era? I’m basically looking for some history. Thanks for the feedback! The dimensions are as follows (although not exact because I’m incompetent when it comes to measuring dimensions.

length: 6’9", nose: 14", tail: 14", width (wide point foward of center) 21.5".

Here are some photos. My friends and I call this board “old school Omar.”

last set of pics. Also I don’t know how thick it is, I don’t have calipers. It’s proably about 3"+ though. The reason the deck looks slanted on the “tailrail.jpg” picture is because the deck delammed above the fin box.

Winged pintails were in vogue starting around 1973-74 and were popular up to the late 70s early 80s. Yours looks mid 70s to me, but thats just a guess. Cool looking board.

iane that board is from 72 or 73 I worked there then . I hotcoated , put the box in and glossed and polished it . Looks like it pretty beat but thats not bad for 30+ years ago.Never say later to a Yater! Look for a number on the deck and see if theres a letter somewhere.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Kirk, I will check the deck when I get home. Thanks again.

Kirk, Maybe a little later, I started my first shop in SB in Fall 74 and the wing designs had’nt kicked in yet. I could never make wings do anything for me. 74, 75 seems like that was when Saggus was arround. I think he shaped some of those for Y. Also the side located logos were influenced by Haut/Andreini. Lane could look for “Y” or “Saggus” below number. Too bad Rennie threw away all the old invoices when he last moved it would answer alot of queries. One time I climed up on top of the office and looked up my first new board from him and found the invoice, dated June 1967. If memory serves me correctly I don’t think anyone else shaped for RY in those years 72,73. Hey I looked at the pics from SW04 weekend, wow! One of Barron Spafford? Give me a call. TB

Hey Tim after I posted that I was thinking the same thing, maybe a little later. Mike shaped most of the longboards, but the letter by the # will tell.I begged Rennie for those invoices, that was a whos who of surfing history. We were stuck in traffic a couple of weeks ago and I sad it was a mistake to throw them out.He says [pissed off now]what ,now Im gonna have every guy buggin me for old board invoice from 1959!!! #^**!+ it, glad I chucked um!!

Kirk - what year did Bradbury and Yater start using hydrofoam and epoxy? We have an early 6’ 8" Bradbury here in good condition; were you around the shop in the early 80’s? Could you put a time line on it?

Thanks, for the knowledge and history!

I was gone by then ,but thats a good ?Ill look into it.Hows the new hip?

It’d be great to see Josh or Tom C. or

Herb ride this board. Early hydrofoam, still in good shape after all these years.

The new parts are working well. Back at work, and doing P.T. That’s my life. I’m starting to stare back at my boards. Maybe I’ll give it a go in a few weeks. Thanks for asking.

Aloha!
