For those Interested, A progress update of the removable nose surfboard. Background: I have cut the first 2" off my old Tom Current 6’6 and have sealed the ends with glass, then used PVA release agent on both ends and using a small amount of resin stuck both ends together. Then I moulded a f-glass sleave around both pieces, I laminated a 1’ layer of glass around the joint front and back, 6" on each side of the joint. This formed a sleave in which the two parts fit, the sleave fits like a glove and both pieces fit inside with negligible movement. I then laminated an additional 2 layers around the rails forming reinforced C or U sections around the rails. I am letting it cure but my initial thoughts are positive, its a bit nose heavy but I intend to sand it down and loose about 25% of the weight of the sleave, this then should be acceptable. I did not bond the sleave to the nose section so all pieces are fully removable. I did this in case I needed to modify the design. My initial thoughts are that the F-glass is too heavy and that a carbon sleave would be better. Also that the strength in the sleave is only really required around the rails and then middle section only holds it together. The down side, it looks like the leading edge will scoop water so I will tape it down in the testing, so it doesn’t, however if I bonded the sleave to the nose section then this would be avoided. I will be testing this week, and if it works I will look to reduce the weight, initially by making a carbon fibre sleave, hopefully this will be stiffer and less weight. If this is not successful I will then reform the sleave and this time bond it to the front nose section but the sleave will only cover the rails on the tail section of the board, I will probably extend them about 2" around the deck and bottom and make them about 8" long, This will reduce the weight considerably and should still give the rigidity required. For those wondering the aim is to fit my board in the boot of the car for easy transport on those days where your going somewhere and don’t want to leave a board in the car but want to take a board just in case. I will take a photo and attach next update, Its called Frankenboard Andy
