Can someone tell me how I would go about removing glass on fins? thx
Using a utility knife, score the area around the fin to be removed. Then with a rubber mallet, tap lightly on the fin at its base to break it out. Scoring - if done properly - should prevent excess peeling or delamination of the surrounding fiberglass.
For thicker glass jobs, I prefer a Dremmel rotary tool for scoring. Take care to not cut into the foam if at all possible.
Howzit Turbo, I use a 4 1/2" 12,000 rpm grinder with a thin sanding disk. You can grind off the glass and glass rope around the base and use it like a slicer to get the fin loose enough that you won't damage the board unless the fin has been knocked loose and the damage already done. I've done quite a few of these for guys who wanted their glass ons replaced with a fin system. Just be careful with the high speed grinder since it's easy to make a mistake which can result in damage to the board. I have been able to grind them to the point that the only thing holding the fin to the board was the hot glue used to set the fin. Good luck. Aloha, Kokua
You can also take a soft rubber mallet or rock and hit them with 480 lbs of side pressure, it’s amazing how fast they come off this way. If you hit them fast enough, you can take them clean off the board and have them land in your neighbors yard. Have your friends take turns seeing who can whack the fin the farthest, winner gets to sniff resin and patch the destroyed tail without a mask. Fun

Jay --------------You did it again. You got me laughin’ my a$$ off. McDing
Turbo ------- I go with the Dremel and a cutoff blade. Nice and clean. McDing
I was operating under the economy board builder’s code in those daze, didn’t use power tool (planer or sander) and cleaned up the buildup with a arched toothed, flat body file, cost $6. And I taped off the areas I wanted pristine.
