Removing Stomp Pad Glue?

Got the pad off, now for the glue. What do you think??

I’d try one of the citrus-based cleaner/degreaser’s first with a plastic putty knife and a coarse rag , say a piece of an old towel. If that doesn’t work, escalate to acetone. That’ll dull the finish a little, but a whole lot less than sanding it off. Bear in mind a few cautions when using acetone: http://www.swaylocks.com/glossary/index.cgi?Acetone

Lest I forget - either one you wind up using, let the stuff soak into the glue a bit and soften it before you go to town with the rag and putty knife.

hope that’s of use

doc…

I just pulled a stomp pad off the other day, tried one on my fish and did’nt like it, put it too far forward.

Anyhoo, to get the glue off i just went after it with a fillet knife and foam dust. The dust will cause the goo to ball up and fall away like it does to wax, not as well but it works…heat it up in the sun too.

of course good ol’acetone will work, but why does it need to be sparkling if wax is going over the top anyway.

There are a lot of the glues out there that are HTPB based. Acetone will not tough them. A solvent that I hate even more then acetone is toluene and that may work, or try hexane or cyclehexane, or even kerosene.

I forgot to add, after you have it all sun heated, foam dust it and rub the hell out of it and repeat. This worked for what ever adhesive my stomp pad had which was kinda sticky and gelatious/ Gelatious is not the right word, its the soft elastic consistancy of something that you pick at if it was on you desk and you were at school in a boring lecture.

I prepared a long reply but canned it. In brief acetone, no. Toluene will work, but no. Methanol will probably work, but it will harm the acrylic finish if you have one. So I say no.

Sun and foam dust, not a bad idea. Nothing wrong with elbow grease. Cheap too. I give that an okay.

Best chemical based solution to your problem is Coleman’s stove fuel, a white gas. About $5 a gallon. Do not substitute any other form of gasoline. The additives they put in there are real nasty. Repeat. Do not substitute!

Coleman’s stove fuel is an excellent relatively non-destructive adhesive remover. Everyone make a note. This is standard information in the 3D prototyping industry.

3m adhesive remover. Most marine supply stores carry it.

MarkSpindler, Colman fuel should do the trick. I for one can’t stand the stuff. The wife and I did a backpacking trip up into the back woods many years ago. I have a old little WWII Colman stove, one burner and the pot and cup house the stove. Great little stove. I have just picked up a new fuel holder that looked kinda like a flask, well I filled it up with Colman fuel and we were off. The first night I cooked up a dish and it tasted like Colman fuel. It did not make us sick but we both had Colman fuel on our breath, for the whole trip. Can’t tell you how many time we burped Colman fuel. I have a propane stove now. I know this has nothing to do with surfboards but. This did bring back momerys of days gone by.

Good thing you didn’t belch near an open flame:-)
