HELP! I am currently repairing a baord that has has lots of poor repairs with bondo ect. the owner wants me to fix the repairs, and paint the board then coat it with resin. My plan is to make all repairs, then resin coat the entire the board and sand to smooth it out , then paint it, then a coat of resin sand and polish. My question is: exactly what type of paint to use, brand , and where to get it. I am have experieince with spraying auto HVLP guns and would prefer this method. Can I use Auto air water based paint from eastwood.com ( it does have a catalyst)? please help.
I would recommend a high quality acrylic like Nova Color. You have to be very careful on sanding the gloss over it, or you’ll be painting some more. What I do on restorations like this is to lam clear 4 oz over the paint, then hotcoat and gloss. No sand throughs this way.
having repaired alot of boards… personally i would do all the repairs…sand it down…THEN PAINT … then apply the hot coat and give it a sanded finish or go the gloss coat route…or do all the repairs and resin tint the board…as far as the type of paint i personally have used acralyic, spray paint, water colors, car paint and even ink…and ink pens…
after giving this more thought… another way is to to put paint in the q-cell which matches the color of the board than sand and glass …or sand down the q-cell and paint and glass…but it sounds like you are trying to repaint the entire board without re- glassing…so you willl be putting paint on-top of old glass …this will require some delicate sanding trying not to sand through the glass…most restoration projects involve basic ding repair where the paint is applyed then new glass is sanded and finished to either a gloss coat or sanded finish which ever matches the exsisting finish.what ever the case i beleave you would be better off painting the board…then applying what ever type of finish you want…
thanks for all the help from everyone! I will be using the acrylic from Novacolor to redo the stripes then resin coat the entire board with a slight tint to mask some of the imperfections. Ihope to post befre and after pics when it’s done!
thanks,
Nick
