Repair small crack without fiberglass patch?

Hey guys.  I’ve got a board with a couple rail dings / cracks.  The resin is cracked and you can feel the fiberglass rough edges.  I’m very tempted to sand it a tiny bit and try to just put some resin over to seal it.   it is a very new crack and might not have ever been exposed to water (I’m thinking it happend in the car.

Will that work or do I need to sand more and do a fiberglass patch?

Thanks!

Thanks guys!  Yeah, I guess there aren't any shortcuts and that was the answer I was looking for (but maybe not hoping for)

That crazy glue idea is interesting though...   Anyway, I did go ahead and put some fiberglass patches on last night.  it's a tinted board, so I tried laying them more on top without removing too much of the original glass trying to keep the original color.  We’ll see how it comes out.

I also finished an old repair that I never wet sanded.  Happened to find some rubbing compound in my garage.  Wow, I think that has been my problem.  I could never get the finish back to original.  That compound seems to make all the difference.

If you can find it, try a piece of 2oz. over the crack and sand out. 4 oz. will work with more effort. Depends on size and width of crack.Prep is everything.

What tblank said - look, if it was enough of a crunch to get you glass damage, you need to strengthen that again, bridge over the crack.Just brushed-on resin has zero strength and will just crack again and leak or become the weak point that starts a buckle or break. You really need to fix it. Me, I usually put on glass unless it's a simple scratch that only needs polishing. Just something you should do as a matter of course, better safe than sorry.

Sand well and carefully, put the cloth to it, feather the edges of the laminate, hotcoat/gloss and wet sand as need be and you're there. Just one simple additional step that makes all the difference.

hope that's of use

doc...

Did you crack just the hot coat or did you crack the fibreglass underneath it as well?

Sounds like the kind of thing I'd use Cyanoacrylate Glue (aka Super Glue) on.    It will wick into hairline cracks, and also strenthen fractured fibers, and responds to wet/dry sanding and polishing.  Try it.

what Bill said will get you on your way

does that little super glue trick work well for the little 1-3" cracks you get on the side of the rail running the length of the board too or just low stress spots in flat areas?

I've been bashed hard for this in the past...here we go again....

If you bring me your surfboard for a repair I will always use fiberglass cloth over the ding. If you are too cheap to have me repair your surf board...................................

Go out to the shiping dock. Get some clear tape and put it over the ding. Good ,cheap, temp repair. Do not use duct tape. Sooner or later you will have to pay me to fix your surfboard but the clear tape will get you back in the water.......

Clear tape for now...get it on there tight and smooth...if you do it clean no one will know it's there.

The $50 you need to pay me for the repair will be worth it........in the long run...........

Thrailkill, when you put the super glue on the crack do you have to sand the cracks and the area around the ding too or just let the glue wick into the cracks and clean up extra glue that remains on the surface?

SurferO,

I’ve done it both ways.       Either one needs a light wet sand, and compound polish for a good final finish.

Cool sounds good.  I will definately give that a try. Thanks again!
