So I have a twin fin fish that has what I believe are the FCS fusion fin boxes in them. Anyways, took a nasty ride down the falls and managed to land ontop/brush against one of my keels. Turns out it compressed the finbox into the foam (not badly at all) and made it rather loose. Fortunately, only one side of the fin box is clearly loose so I can assume there isn’t any nasty damage going on. Also, there are 0 cracks in the actual fiberglass surrounding the fin box, just the fin box is loose.
Here’s the thing, I was just going to sell this board soon anyways as I wasn’t really feeling it since I got it. I had a buyer lined up and everything, so the idea of putting more money into this board pains me. So I want to do the repair myself.
Assuming there isn’t really too much foam damage, and the surround glass/foam seems intact, can I easily do this repair without too much work? I ran into another user’s post where he had the idea to put a layer of filler in, before it gelled push the fin box in, pull it out, and the repair would be easy from there. Is that a viable option? I don’t have a router so if that is going to be necessary I’ll have to take it to a repair shop. But I’ve done quite a few repairs so I feel confident I can handle this. And if you guys recommend this method, any tips?
kinda hard to tell without seeing it, but I think the key will be getting resin down into the area surrounding the loose box, and getting the box set straight, no wonkiness from the damage. If you can do that, you should be good. If you can get some glass, even chopped glass, down in there too, so much the better.
The surrounding fiberglass is from my initial repair not too long ago. There was some minor facturing going on around the fin box, so I sanded it down and threw a few sheets of fiberglass on there to hopefully reinforce it. Well I guess flying over the falls and landing right back on that fin was a sign that I needed to do a real repair.
Seeing this picture, what would be the procedure you’d go through? Thanks!
Yeah, having seen the pic, I have to agree with those who say remove the box and set a new one, or re-set it if it comes out in good shape. Can’t see any other way to get the resin down where it needs to be for a good bond.
