This was found in Ballona Creek near the 405 freeway while I bicycled home from work. Surprisingly light, I tucked this Dennis Murphy 9’6" Red Baron under my arm for the 12 remaining miles.
My son wants me to surf with him and this will be my board. My access to power tools is limited to a Dremel and an orbital sander. Please let me know if my plan is reasonable. I have more time than sense.
The deck is pretty solid while the bottom is a mess. The nose and tail need rebuilding. It will get a glassed in single fin.
I was going to start by cutting away the glass around the nose and tail to just beyond the delamination, splice and/or repair the stringer there, remove the two remaining fin boxes, rebuild the nose and tail with q-cell, lay two layers of glass for the rebuilt nose and tail deck and 3 layers on the tail bottom where I will glass in a 9 1/2 inch fin. I will also have to address all the other dings and delaminations which are mostly on the bottom. From my pictures of the bottom, does it look like a better idea might be to sand the bottom to the cloth, cut away any loose cloth, q-cell all the depressions, patch where I cut the holes and reglass the whole bottom? I want to preserve all graphics.
I’ve read a bunch on here, watched some videos and would like this Red Baron to resemble some of the golden-aged longboards on David Platt’s website.
