resin and acetone

I could use a little help please. Can I thin out a little lam resin with acetone to cosmetically fill in some scratches in the lam before I hot coat? Will it change the cat ratio? Is this just a bad Idea? I glassed on fins and ground a free lap.It went off a little fast, but not bad. In the past, (3 boards) I just hot coated over this and notice it hides most but not all scratches. It’s a red pigmented lam and the scratches are pretty loud. I thought if I thin out a little resin I could get it to penetrate a little better. Thanks for taking the time to read this. As a new father I know how valuable everyones time is.

The technique is sound. Mix the resin and cat FIRST, then add a small amount of acetone to thin the mix. Apply to the affected area, and after it sets, hotcoat as normal. Styrene would be better, if you can get any. In either case, it doesn’t take much to thin the mix.

Bill is right…if you can get styrene that would be best, and it would make the scratches virtually disappear. wont take much either. just dip a small 1/2 or 1/4 inch brush onto the styrene and brush it directly over the scratches.

if your playing with color it is wise to have at least a small amount of styrene laying around in an air tight bottle or container for situations like this. last thing i always do when i cut the bottom lap is lightly brush them with styrene…clears up the cut-line and makes it look finished.

Thanks for your help. I’ll try it then.

who sells styrene?

Acetone will cause premature yellowing ,and will make your end product weaker, because acetone breaks down the peptide molecular structure of the resin.

Thin with Styrene is really the only way to go.Styrene is a co-polymer and thins the peptide chain w/o destroying it.

If you were on a desert island and all you had was acetone to thin with, then I guess you’d have to go with that.
