resin pigment or paint foam?

I have made a few boards but have never painted any. Is it easier to use resin pigments and do a cutlap or just paint on the foam with delta acrylic paint? Thanks

Resin tints Look much classier and are a more traditional method of coloring a board. The coolest aspect of the resin tint is that you’ll have the rails a shade or two darker than the rest of the board which looks in my opinion very cool. also, painting an entire blank is time consuming, costly and can result in poor glass adhesion. To get a decent tint, all it takes is a tablespoon or so of pigment, (an ounce of pigment sells for like $4). Though it takes a lot of time to become fully accustomed to working with tinted resin. Yellow tints are the easieast, darker blues and greend are much more diffficult to get an even color. I would suggest using UV cured laminating resin and start out doing a very light tint on your next board to get the feel for it. The tricky thing about doing a tinted lay-up is achieveing uniform color not only on the deck and bottom, but also on the rails and especially in the nose and tail. OK so that basiccally means everywhere. But don’t be timid to try it. I would say that it took me 3 boards before I was able to get a smooth uniform color. Drew

If you want to apply color to a small section of the board , then that should be painted either on the foam, or on the hotcoat. Painting it on the hotcoat wold give you a very precise surface to work on. I have done some intricate Airbrush work on the hotcoat that would be impossible to achive if you worked directly on the blank. But I have also done simple geomettricc shapes painted right on the blank. You should make up your mind about how you want your board to look before you decide which coloring method to use. Drew
