Just used Kwick Kick on a Wooden board to secure the box fins and it wouldnt dry. After 24 hours it was gummy and would scratch off with my finger nail. Though I mess up my 2:1…re-did it on scap wood and same problem. It took 36 hours to harden on the wood…only 30min to dry in pot (strange). Any one having problems with Kwick Kick on wood? Wood is Bass and Mohogany. Have had no problems with RR2000 and 2001 hardner. What went wrong? I live in southern cal…did it in my garage this weekend and temp was in the 70’s…50’s and night. Used RR2000/2001 for sealer coat last night and was ready to flip in 3 hours.
Greg is at Surf Expo and may not have seen this yet.
It sounds like a mix problem, but you checked that. If it goes off in the pot but not on the wood, the wood or some contamination on the wood is likely the problem. But I could be totally wrong and someone will tell me so really soon...
Got it from FoamEZ…the guys there (Grant and Brad) are rock stars and took care of me…they took it back and exchanged it for RR2000/2001. I left the sample of the re-due and you can see the scratches that where left after 8 hrs. It was dry about 36 hrs later. Couldn’t risk using it on the Balsa Im glassing tomorrow. This is what the wood around the fin box looked like as I tried to sand it off. Maybe just got a bad batch…the other stuff works great.

For the record it was warm in So Cal the weekend of Jan 9-10. I set up my 10' x 10' tarp room with space heater on Sat night and glassed a board on Sunday. I remember complaining to my wife that I wasted my time with the tarp room because it was so warm outside. It's good to know that FoamEZ took care of the customer.
The one thing I have learned about epoxy is that it does not like temperature change durring cure. My guess would be the temperature drop from 70 into the 50s at night.
I glassed it on a warm day (mid 70’s) around noon…i waited till the next day to finally sand of the gummy buildup around the fin boxes. You can see the glasses peice of scrap wood i used to put my pot on. The scrap wood was glasses with RR2000/2001. I dripped Kwick Kick on the cured glass and those drips where still gummy yesterday, but the pot was hard? Go figure.
My distributor in CA called me after seeing you sample. My guess is there was something with the wood. It appeared that it cured fine in the glass but against the wood there was an issue. So my guess is there is something finishing the wood or something in the processing of the wood that caused a reaction. Still seems odd though.
It still depends some on the temperature. Check out the website resinresearch.net for flip times according to temperature. Also, even though the flip times lengthen some in winter the stuff still locks up early so resin doesn’t drain. At 70F (21C) your looking at flip time of about 75 minutes but it stops moving in about 20 min.
I had the same problem but mine did fully cure after 1 day and out in the sun for a while, I noticed when all the epoxy was almost used up the
resin part had about a 1 inch residue that seemed to sink to the bottom. Now I will never know if stirring the resin before mixing it would of made it work right, but I bought another gallon and a half and it cures way faster than the other one, but still does not cure in the time they say, without tons of heat. I think its still a new product and once they start selling huge batches of it, then you will start to see the same curing time over and over. Sounds like you should get a refund, Im sure they would be happy to give you some new stuff, so they can find out what happend to the stuff you got, should cure withing 4 hours at the most.
Maybe they treated the wood with some kind of anti mold/mildew chemical? Did the KK get hard where it was over the plastic fin boxes and not touching the wood?
I’ve been doing some tests with veneer samples, wood dyes and veneer softener. In all my tests the KK kicked off fine and got nice and hard (and seems to adhere well!). I even dumped some wood dye into some extra epoxy that was left in a cup after I laid up some fins. I was sure it wouldn’t harden as I figured the dye was water based (it washes easily off my hands). The epoxy kicked off hard and solid. I’m thinking to use the dye as a tint. But after my last two boards’ adhesion problems, maybe I’ll do another test first. (I have lots of the dyes that I found left over in my classroom- I teach art and the previous teacher taught home economics).
