Resin Research in Australia??

Hey Guy

Well I have just spent the last 2hrs on the net searching for a distributer of Gregs resin research epoxy in Australia.

The closest I got was a company in New Zealand. (Haven’t heard back yet)

Does any one know where I get hold of this stuff.

I haven’t used epoxy at all yet, but reading all the posts here on sways, it seems to be the best, so thats what I want.

I have heard all the problems with sanding amoungst other things without the additive F and it seems that resin research is the only one with such an additive.

SO WHERE CAN I GET IT???

Can I order it strait from Greg himself and have him ship it to me, or will it cost to much??

Any advise??

Cheers

hi mate,

rr is not available here… as yet. ATL have good epoxy that works well with surfoards… additive F is basicly just xylene with parrifin melted into it…

.

.

Who is ATL???

Have also heard that FGI has good epoxy too.

(additive F is basicly just xylene with parrifin melted into it… )

Yer but does anyone know how much xylene to parrifin combo and actually tried it themselves??

Cheers

my first search on google for “atl epoxy” returned these results

http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=atl+epoxy&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

my search in the archives for “mixing additive f”

returned this thread…

http://www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=323761;search_string=mixing%20additive%20f;#323761

FGI do make a surfboard epoxy as well, i use both… you asked for RR, i gave you the closest i know of in australia = ATL

the archives have many many answers…hope this helps.

Thanks feraldave

I will have a look.

Cheers

mds,

you can get the ATL stuff (Kinetics) from shapers.com.au

http://www.shapers.com.au/category13_1.htm

might be a good option as they deliver and they also have an eps foam sealer.

i havnt tried this stuff (yet) but Bert Burger and Feral Dave have. Bert said it is up there with RR.

good luck,

scot

you could just go down the marine shop and gets some west system

they have a uz resistant hardener for a 3 to 1 mix they do

i think its the 207 but dont quote me

ask the boat guy to order you a west system thats clear and has uv resistant

heaps of kayakers use it to cover bright work

it may have an ever so slight yellowish tinge

but who gives

right

you can make plenty strong boards out of cheapo insulation foam and cheapo expoxy

no worries

then when youve tinkered around with that for a bit and get used to the materials

you can fork out the big dollars and get some fancy eps blanks and resin

and realize at the end of the day when your pulling in

ones a bit whiter!

Hi MDS, FGI, Fibre Glass International, in Brookvale, near Manly Sydney, has epoxy and PE resins and all sorts of mat, rovings, carbon fibre, kevlar for surf thru to yachts. Info sheets on the website, Google FGI.

I have already spoken to the guys there and will probably go with them.

They seem pretty knowledgable as to what I wan’t.

Price is OK as well.

Apparently, there is a distributer of Resin Research in New Zealand called seabase.

Wrote them an email but haven’t heard back yet

Cheers

Glad you got in contact, I go there and they are pretty smart and helpful too. Theres also a cheap EPS manufacturer in a nearby suburb if you need cheap blanks to go with the epoxy. Lemme know if I can help. I’m just collaborating on a hot wire setup with a guy from www.Realsurf as we speak.

Who are the EPS suppliers???

I have contacted A & C polystyrene out west somewhere, and they seem to be reasonably priced.

They were recommended from someone else here on sways.

Also, have you used FGI’s epoxy??

And what sort of results did get??

Cheers

there are a stack of good epoxys around now ,

i currently am using 6 different epoxies out of 12 recent ones we used ,to get a feel for what ones would work well in production , after using RR for the last few years …

ATL and Burfords both have real good resin ,

the Fiberglass Hawaii stuff is awsome …

its only been the winter months down here , so i have yet to run an entire year with some of these newer systems …

but i can say that RR has slipped to 4 on my list of prefered resin systems …

that being said tho , RR along with some of these newer ones are all out in a class of there own …

but RR doesnt hold that unique spot like it did , in that some of the new systems being developed are now making the use of epoxy easier than it ever was …

Hey Bert

You say “after using RR for the last few years”

Where did you get it from??

Did you have it shipped over yourself??

Also, You metioned 4 different brands of epoxy.

Are they readilly available in Sydney??

And if so, Which do you prefere???

Did you have any troubles with sanding, curing, blushing or anything else???

Cheers

no drama at all with any of the new systems …

the two systems that would be easiest for you to get would be the ATL range , from ATL , and the FH from Burfords …

im not sure what system FGI have , i have a feeling it could be Revchem , im not sure , but that is an awsome system as well …

yes , we did mix our own RR at FW , but FW keep it for internal use only …

ATL looks as though it would be the good stuff.

Specially if Shapers stocks and sells it.

But can you get it in smaller batches than 6 ltr packs??

How many boards will you get out of 6 ltrs???

Do you use the same resin for sanding as well??

Cheers

Hey Bert

How do you finish your epoxy boards???

Wet sand??

Speed coat??

Polish??

Cheers

i use atl resins NZ

there great and have a good range of infusion resins, west systems, adr range, kinetix etc, thixtropics

but when your talking a thin shell over soft core

its gunna make stuff all difference which resin you use

“west” resins work great

and easy to find

i am told they have a clear uz resistant resin

and hundreds of tonnes of it is used in many different industries every year

probably thousands

slap a 2 pac over that and your laughing
