The Red Resin Swirl has gone smoothly. We just masked for an overlap and slapped the resin on to the foam how we wanted and squegeed off the excess so it’s like a thin layer of paint! This photo is prior to glassing, it’s just resin directly on the foam! This egg will get a black pin line and a polished glass job! It was really easy and very fun, there are more pics on my website www.throwns.com .
Very nice ,thanks for the photos!
What type of resin did you use?
Why did you choose to do the swirl on the foam?
I have a Biofoam blank that I’ve been working on…Shape looks just like yours…
Thanks again
Ray
Thanks,
It’s polyester resin,I have used poly on all my biofoams with no issues. I can’t wait until there is an affordable plant resin I can use. We started using resin on the foam because Homeblownus said that some airbrush accryllic colors crytallize on the biofoam. This allowed us to produce biofoams with custom paint jobs. Then we started thinking, and talking with some local glassers and they said we could swirl right on the foam as well. This saves a lot of money if you are out sourcing a glass job. The resin coat acts as a sealer for the foam, and a paint scheme, and then you only have to glass clear.
correct me if im wrong but back when, wasnt this method called ‘marbleing’?
I just did my 2nd glass job and it was on a Homeblown Biofoam blank. We did the standard clear cheater seal coat, nothing as sick as your color work on the foam. I actually put my tint into the cloth coat though-- I dunno if that was the best thing to do or not (what is your take on doing it that way??)
In theory you use way less resin for the cheater coat than you would a regular swirl lam, but in THIS unique case, about how much resin did you use to swirl onto the foam in comparison to a standard lam job?
Great post, I like the Biofoam concept too and I really want to see what can be done when glassing them. Good looking board by the way!!
Unfortunately I have never done an in cloth resin swirl. I am such a novice glasser and I lack propper facilities so I out-source most of my glassing, especially color work. The coat I applied was probably like the cheater coats you have done. The resin sits for a couple of minutes while all the different colors are added. Then I squegee off all the excess, so the color coat is very thin.I’m not sure how much weight difference there would be versus in cloth color. I don’t think there would be much because all the excess is squeesed out of the cloth whether it’s colored or clear, but it is definitely worth looking into!
Great thread so far…I finished my BioFoam board today. It would be interesting to hear from anyone working with this foam.
It all started at Swaylock’s Big Sur 2007. I did not win the blank but I came home with it! The blank sat around for a while. One day after a few beers MarkSSD and I started messing with the blank…Well…we shaped 80% of the thing by hand using a hobby plane and some sand paper. It wasn’t planed it just happened. I like this foam

The photos hide the flaws…
hi Ray !
2 questions :-
what are the dimensions of that board , and what fin(s) will you use ?
and …
was that a blue tint [on cloth] , or a tint foam job ?
cheers !
ben
The board is glassed with Resin Research Epoxy. One 6 ounce bottom ,Two 6 ounce top. The color is pigment in the lam…I did the bottom with 15 oz of resin. Thought I could do the top with 15 oz…Not enough resin…came out blotchy…
The cut laps are not perfect. Learned a few things here. Hard to explain… Did not pin line…next on will be better!!!
…
6’3" x 21 1/2" x 2 1/2"
Don’t have fins yet…What do you recommend???
Wow! nice board! it was close to the same as my red one. the red board is 6’2" x 20.5" x 2.25" I am going to upload some biofoam pics soon!
thanks Ray !
will it be a single , a 2+1 or a widowmaker , or a thruster [or , the option of ALL of the above , plus a 5 finner ?
let me know , and your address [p.m. me?] , and i’ll see what i can come up with for you …
cheers mate !
