Is there any issue on mixing some resin with a tint and then painted the blank before laminating?
I assume weight is going to be added to the board, but apart from that isn’t this a more secure way to colour a board i.e preventing a horrible looking burn through into the laminate.
Do people do this? I have seen a shaper on the gold coast through their facebook page with a board coloured and a reference to a tint. Obviously no secrets given from the shaper.
I know most people would spray on acrylic paint instead.
i’ve never done a tinted foam stain… only pigment. it goes on alot more translucent than you’d think. do a test piece… makesure you blank is scratch/blemish free
One of my friends does a lot of foam stains in conjunction with his opaques. He’ll do an acid spash in the lam on the bottom and then do a foam stain on the deck as an insert and glass over that in clear with a freelap. The effect is similar to acid spash on both sides without the overlap on the rails. You can’t even tell unless you’re looking for it.
I think resin colors are richer that airbrushes, especially in the laminations where they get that extra depth and texture. I like the idea of resin-resin adhesion as opposed to paint-resin.
Thanks guys, just seems easier to me to do a foam stain than doing it during the lamination. I am a learner, I don’t intend to do anymore than 10 boards a year, so I reckon this is a better way to go if I want colour.
Thanks for the info too.
Celticskunk - I did check this out but some videos are missing for me. I’ll dig deeper.
