resin

what are the pros and cons of epoxy vs polyester resin for the home board builder?

what are the pros and cons of epoxy vs polyester resin for the home board > builder? Epoxy: strong, very light, stiffer, works with any foam, I’ve got an epoxy board(2yrs.) that I love, but the rails have become very brittle and shatter like glass when given a good corner of the door shot. Some people find it too stiff but I think the biggest con is $$$$$$$, it’s very pricey. polyester: melts polystyrene foam, cheaper jeff

Jeff has some good info. I would add that epoxy can cause hypersensivity if your come in contact with it. Use it with care. Something to think about is how much flex you want in your board when choosing epoxy or poly.>>> Epoxy: strong, very light, stiffer, works with any foam, I’ve got an epoxy > board(2yrs.) that I love, but the rails have become very brittle and > shatter like glass when given a good corner of the door shot. Apparently, as you work with it over the years it gradually builds up the toxicity level in you body which never goes away just grows. Once you hit a max toxic level you have an alleric type reaction(this is what a dermatologist told one of the guys anyway) which I have seen and it’s not pretty. Severe swelling and hugh blisters on arms, chest, feet, general nastiness. I’ve seen a few old guys this has happened to and once it happened to them they can’t so much as smell the fumes of epoxy kicking and boom, blister city. While some people are just plain allergic and it happens the first time they look at the stuff, but when I say old guys I mean guys that have been useing the stuff 30 or 40 years having little precausions with junk long since banned from use. Don’t know if the same thing happens with resin as epoxy is mostly all I’ve used (aircraft tooling). Seen the same thing with aluminum in a few machinist. jeff
