Resins Seeking Knowledge

I am interested in know about any differences in resins from different companys. I glassed four boards using a Ortho resin by ashland, I had no problems with the resin. The kink is that the lady i ordered from game me a general purpose resin the one mentioned. There is actually a resin that this company provides, silmar “worlds foremost surfboard resin” so it says. I had customer service send me data sheets, most things compare equal: both a wet out resin, all the other stuff is the same or with in a few digits( maybe that is alot). The viscosity is 475 on the surfboard resin; monomer 37% and the other is 500 with; monomer of 45%. Any information pertaining to this would be grateful. Speaking of grateful thought id rub iit in that im going to the Dead and Willy Nelson on fri.

see ya at the Tweeter

Data sheets are a nice thing. But they don’t tell you 3/4 of what you need to know about how a resin reacts with the other materials it’s married to. The reason some resins are accepted in the surfing industry over others are the overall performance aspects of those particular resins on surfboards. At Resin Research we produce epoxy resins. I have a list in my office of nearly 50 different aspects of the performance of each resin we produce that must balance correctly for the end product intended. For instance we make a fishing rod resin. The UV properties have to be similar to surfboard resin but viscosity, flexibility, cure time and a host of other aspects must be different. Unique to that end product. That’s why surfboard companies buy the specialty resins instead of the cheaper products available. The quality of the end product. And in the end product, the little bit of extra money you spend on having the best material will end up paying off exponentially in the end.

If you are going to see Willie Nelson at least spell his name right.

Or are you going to see willy nelly and the greatful deed. Oh rub it in.
