I get premixed gallon of lam or sanding resin for $24. How much could I expect to save if I just got Silmar and mixed my own? What’s the learning curve on getting the right mix? I don’t really want a can of styrene sitting around the house, but I’m curious.
people like to mix their own sanding resin because sometimes the wax doesn’t get mixed in well enough and leaves a sanding mess. this sometimes happens with larger amounts of resin. or not enough wax was added for the glassers taste.just my 2 cents

You just add surface agent at 3-5% to the resin. One of the big benifits is that you’re not wasting money on a lot of resin that you may not need. Most surfboards can be glassed with less than a gallon of resin. That means that if you mix your own sanding resin you don’t have to buy a seperate container of resin for sanding, especially when it should only take you less than a quart of resin per board. Good Luck, Matthew
Do you have to add styrene to lam resin to make a good hotcoat or is the SA enough?
i wouldn’t…styrene will thin the resin out. you will want to leave the hotcoat a little thicker so that it will fill the weave better. use styrene in the gloss coat…
Add more styrene? Yeah it makes your life easier in some applications, but adding excess styrene makes your boards turn yellow quicker, and makes the resin brittle, easier to pressure ding. There is enough styrene in there already. You are not doing your customers any favors by adding excess styrene. You guys all know about the resin price increase happening next week? Sluggo
increase where? all manuf??
Yep, all manufactures are increasing resin $0.04 per lb on Febuary 10th. Expect more in the future with war looming and Venezuela oil problems. Plus the price of stryene has skyrocketed. If the resin manufactures could pull it off, they would go up a lot more, so I would expect another hit soon after this one. Probably won’t effect people buying 5 gallon pails. Sluggo
