Restoring Older Boards

Unfortunately I’ve got to work tomorrow, so I have to battle out there on the weekends.

Yes Mike Davis from Kiama, I bought the board new at a Surf Expo in Sydney in 1982.

We’ll have to catch up some time

cheers

Hi HerbB, I use the 4 oz. cloth for a number of reasons. It gives a deeper looking finish (with glosscoat) and it makes the board much more durable. The glass gives more protection against minor dings, which can then be addressed using just clear resin. Every little hit the board takes with paint under the hotcoat usually needs more paint. Also, hotcoats just don’t stick that well to paints. By the time you put on enough coats to get opaque coverage, the surface is pretty smooth. I’ve seen sections of hotcoat shatter and peel off after a minor hit. I charge double for repairs on boards painted under hotcoats because the repair area triples in size as you try to blend it in. Everytime you feather in a completed repair (fill, paint, cloth, hotcoat), you can’t help tearing thru the hotcoat into the paint. I started using the cloth method after reading Gene Cooper’s post on Cooperfish glassing. He uses the 4 oz. rather than heavy hotcoats (which add no strength or durability) and as a safety zone to the primary cloth when sanding.

Hey Ben, that Peterson in the photos is an original. I restored it earlier this year. Unfortunately I don’t own it. The deck is original, the bottom is 4oz over auto acrylic then gloss and polish. The owner is not planning to ride it.

You are right I do have a few old relics lying around the place. Some day I will restore these.platty.

A small world, eh? Had a few of his old boards, still got a good old ('76 ish) Peter Sheely (Newy) in the shed and a great old Sam Egan (I think I got it from Andrew?) of about the same vintage - recently sold a 9’10" Gordon Woods ('64) “Nat Young Model” that I restored which I got from him.

Andrew was riding my five finned fish (the one I posted a pic of) at the almighty Cowrie Hole the other day and I wish I had read this post earlier, he’d be stoked to see his pic. and get the respect he deserves, he’s the most humble and non judgemental guy that I have ever met. Before he moved South, I used to surf with him quite regularly, we’d be sitting out the back having a big design rave.

You sound as if you’re on the same wavelength Ben.

Take care,

Craig.

…he was riding a five finned fish ??? well, I’ll be !!! maybe my ‘influence’ has rubbed off ??

that’s a modern board…

Andy , if you’re reading this… hi! I sent you an email…did you get it ??

are you in touch with him regularly, Craig ?
