retinal detachment

any of you had a retinal tear&detachment? How long till you were able to surf big waves again? It’s been a month, had one then a second one a couple weeks later. Will ever be able to surf 2x OH again in your experience?any eye surgeons surfers???Mahalo

Wow, that could be a career ender! Take care of yourself first, then go have fun after. Put your health and your eyesight in the hands of a competent specialist. Don’t push this one.

i hear you, taking it easy and surfing nothing but the internet for a month, just curious if anyone else experienced this, and how they recovered.

How did the injury occur? Did it occur as a result of impact while surfing? Very scarey thing to deal with. Don’t, repeat, don’t be in a rush to get back in the water. Better to miss an entire season, and then have many more ahead of you, than to rush, and have this one be your last. Best of luck to you.

no,just happened, doc said nothing to do with surfing and years of wipeouts,so that’s a relief for us surfers.

I’m not an eye surgeon but I work for one. There are a wide range of things that fall into the retinal detachment category. This is very near the last place I would ask for advice about them. If your’ opthalmologist can’t give you straight advice on time out of the water ect. get the opinion of another one, preferably a retinal specialist.

Many people have very good outcomes after retinal damage. A good friend of mine had macular hole surgery in both eyes and subsequent cataract surgery. I’m not sure how long he was out of the water he’s back at it now with no restrictions. He’s pretty close to 6/6 (20/20 to you non metric folk) vision in both eyes.

But really do what your specialist tells you. If anything error on the side of caution. Losing vision is a real bummer.

Thanks Jong for your comments.I am being treated by a retinal specialist, just don’t know anyone else who surfs who went through this, and want to know about their recovery surfwise.Hoping I won’t have to take up stand up paddling, yiikes, but if i do,I already have a plan to make it into stand up fishing,haha.

Kia Ora Jong, just reading your pasts posts, and saw that you made yourself a SUB,so no disrespect about the SUP comment, haha!I actually tried it a couple times, since most of my friends took it up,my wife likes it,and I think going fishing with it is gonna be lots of fun.Aloha

Hope everything goes really well with your eyes. I don’t know any surfers other than the friend I mentioned who have had retinal injuries. But I do see a lot of them. Most people seem to get back to their lives pretty well after everything is healed up. I hope you’re back out charging again soon.

I’ve had the stand up out a couple of times in micro waves and it’s clear to me that with my paddling skill I’ll be staying well out of the usual line up. Fising is one of the reasons I made it.
