Retro Bolt build

Got a guy who asked me to build a 7'6" retro Lightning Bolt with some fancy stuff and resin color.

I hooked up with Herb Spitzer and scrounged a template to give me a outline,,, Thanks Herbster!

I used a US blanks 7'7" funboard blank

I will post pics as I go,,, heres the outline cut out and trued,,,,

heres a little back peddling

it seems the fin wants to tilt to one side when I tighten it down

so I add a layer of glass on the leaning side

once it sets I will dial it in or add more glass

But wait!

theres more

outside shots

enjoy

I sure understand that feeling.   I believe the attack letter to Ken has only harmed the ''brand'', rather than ''protecting'' it.    Whatever positive public image they  had going for them, prior to that letter, has pretty much evaporated.   Reading between the lines, it seems that the only effort being put forth is to exploit the positive image created by others FORTY YEARS AGO, in my humble opinion.    Makes me wonder why anyone would buy thier products, or want to be identified with the current  operators. Now the vintage stuff, that's a different story.    I don't think this dustup impacts the vintage examples in any negative way.    But, that's just an opinion too, time will reveal the true effect if any.

lets do a second start to show the pics

Howzit ken,Did one a few years ago with the red bottom and yellow deck with the big bolt on the deck just like the real onesfrom the 70's and the guy loved it. I think he planned on riding it a few times then hanging it on the wall. Told me it looked just like the one he had back in the days on Oahu. From what I can see from the pics your outline is really nice and clean, good luck and tell Herb Aloha from me. Aloha,Kokua

thanks Kokua!

I will foil it up ,, rails and V the tail tomorrow

and post more pics

while I had the outline 2 dimentional I layed out the veneers to match the rail

cut out my paterns and did a mock up..

that is just way cool!

Hey Huck

thanks for the comment, heres a shot of it all shaped up

I have to confess, I painted a red one on the roof in my room when I was 16. The lightbulb was in the centre...

Hicksy

Really like what I'm seeing so far.  Look forward to see the finished product.

hey foamdust

thanks for watching!

from the previous pics showing the veneers, they are stacked at the time of the photo.

meening they are itentical cut outs slid apart. after I had them mocked up I had to cut the dark wood so it slides up against the lighter wood and I dont get a step in the veneers.

useing veneer tape the pieces are assembled as to be one flat piece.

that was a real pain cause the grain tends to make the cuts wander and its real tricky to sand veneer edges.

heres a shot of it in the vac bag

he said he liked blue

Aloha, that is fun to watch the progress, mahalo for letting us watch.I run into Tom Parrish now and then, either in the lineup,or when he’s picking up or dropping off boards from my friend who does the glassing.

I'm new to the shaping aspect of surfing and I'm curious why you vacuum bagged it?? What purpose does that serve??

the vacuum bagging compress's the blank to make it denser and harder, kind of like how diamonds are made.

this yields a much more dent resistant and completely unbreakable.

Ha Ha Ha ,,, not realy

the bagging it to force the veneer skins to the contours of the foam as the glue cures.
