Retro Fish Question

after tranfering my outline to a blank is it best to not cut the butt crack out until I’m done with foiling the board?

Yes it is, Adam30. This way, swallow pins won’t get hurt at some stage in the shaping process and you won’t have the blank twist too much when applying pressure in the tail area (with sanding pad, for instance).

Thanks, I thought I read that somewhere on here before but I wanted to make sure.

I can even give you a tip if you did not cut the blank yet…

You may have a few more foam at the tail before you cut.

Keep that foam until you shape the swallow, that will provide you a better rail line close to the tips.

Here is why: foam is like a spring you push with the sandng bolck and it bends then moves back.

The fact is when shaping a swallow you can dig a kind of depression just before the tips, along the rail.

If you keep the extra foam, then you have a chance to have the hole disapear after you cut.

I do the crack at the very, very end… right before the final foam pad sanding.

Thats the last shaping step i take, finishing the swallow, before doing my final 80, 120, 220 sand screen-josh

I don’t cut my tails out until I’m almost done w/ the shape, eg. cut the tail out just before final fine screening.

I use a 6" serrated steak knive.

thanks everyone!!

Well, that’s nothing, I don’t cut my but crack until I’m at the beach. That way I can see what the waves look like first. Took a little while to get the water out.

(Just having a little good natured fun)

I’m a Crack addict…

And oh by the way … Adam, remember to tuck in your tee shirt … proudly moving around the tail after all is finished, and catching a loose fold of a tee on a tip … well you know … Good luck ! … dalecoralreallyboughtthatmathavefun … !!

BROM SIGHTING!

I’m curious. What blank are you using to net the proper thickness and width per these tempalates?

I got a 6’11"R EPS blank from Drew @ Inspired surfboards (drewtang)

I was having Drew make all my new boards that I wanted and now that I’m making an attempt to do it myself I thought I would still send business his way by getting blanks from him.

It’s the first time I’ve worked with EPS, It’s really different.
