retro vs modern

another dumb quest. but here goes…what are the performance differences betwee a , let’s say, a 9-6 modern retro type of board vs. a 9-6 modern longboard,? given same widths, and thicknesses.can you ride them on the same type of wave??..ive ridden both and outside of the retro maybe noseriding a bit better, i dont see or feel much difference…i myself am partial to the retro look…i love my roots…the retro shapes and craftsmanship on many/all of the boards ive seen are exquisite…thanks.jer.

usually the dimensions of a retro board would be a little bigger than the modern boards. the modern boards usually have pulled in noses and tails, they have more rocker, they are lighter, usually have three fins, and have harder rails (in the tail at least). retros are heavy, minimal rocker, single fin, soft rails all the way around. if all measurements were the same however i would have to say that the retro would be slower, harder to turn, it would noseride better, and be oh so smooth. retros make clean lines. you cant throw a retro around like you can a shortboard - or a modern longboard for that matter. retros are for cruising. the weight not only aids noseriding but also builds a lot of momentum and glide into the board. the modern longboard will be easier to turn and whip around, it will be faster, it will noseride, but not nearly as well. modern longboards are more for big turns and off the lip style surfing. it really just comes down to what you want to do and who you want to surf like. if you want to surf like they did in the 60’s and make it look good then the right board is a retro. if you want to flail around and try to do all that shortboard stuff on a longboard then you should get a modern board. -steve>>> another dumb quest. but here goes…what are the performance > differences betwee a , let’s say, a 9-6 modern retro type of board vs. a > 9-6 modern longboard,? given same widths, and thicknesses.can you ride > them on the same type of wave??..ive ridden both and outside of the retro > maybe noseriding a bit better, i dont see or feel much difference…i > myself am partial to the retro look…i love my roots…the retro > shapes and craftsmanship on many/all of the boards ive seen are > exquisite…thanks.jer.
