Hi all
Getting closer to finishing my hollow 8’4" ply and cork board. I need to know what paints/inks to use on rice paper. Or would it be better to do graphics directly on the wood. I’ll be using epoxy to cover.
thanks

high quality pacific northwest wooden totem poles are sometimes painted with red and black sharpies
Never mind the fly in the SOUP Hicksy… Check the archives. More info on rice paper graphics than you can shake a wooden board at. Everything from printers, to types of rice paper, to best inks to use…
Thanks for that Waxfoot, I’ll check them out…

If your in Ireland/UK/Europe, seabase do paper for decals that you just print and put under glass
Thanks SimonJ, no I live in West Oz. I was wondering if I could use rice paper in a colour laser printer, would the ink hold fast under glass, any other suggestions greatly appreciated…

what makes a laser printer work??
Are you for real?

Think he’s taking the piss about the laser: “what makes a laser printer work”… Obviously hasn’t read the archives…

i’ve read the arch. would you recomend a laser? i’d prefer a good inkjet.
In my limited experience, I think lazer printer graphics in general hold up much, much better to UV fading compared to inkjet. Lazer printer “toner” is more like a pigment than like an ink. The toner is a powder that is applied to a drum inside the printer with an electrical charge, then as the paper moves across the drum the toner is transfered to the paper. I seem to get crisper lines and richer color compared to the inkjet graphics I have made - at least when using epoxy which is the only resin I have used.
Thanks for that Trent, anyone else had any experience with laser printers and graphics, perhaps there is some other medium I can use intead of Rice Paper.

When I put rice paper through a laser printer I had to buy a new fuser unit for the printer as the paper got stuck and something happened to the printer. I think there is too much heat for certain types of rice paper when using a laser printer.
Pj_UK that reminds me of the time I made my first logo at Kinkos…I taked them into running my rice paper though their $100,000 printer… the first three came out just fine then the 4th one jambed up the damn thing big time…they were pissed…I snuck out of there before the manager showed up… I now do mine on my HP ink jet printer on high res… they look good. I use Japenese Sketch paper for clear no color backround logos and rice paper painted white on one side and printed on other for white backround logo’s… works for me
I had problems with fading laminates where I was printing from a Canon inkjet printer and a HP Colorjet. I started using a Epson R800 which uses pigmented archival ink and have had no problems from UV fading my laminates.
Howzit FBFla, Those Epson Durabrite inks are supposed to not fade for at least 40 years and you can get one of their C-86 ink jet printers for about $80.00. My C-82 has done hundreds of lams and just keeps on going. These days I’m saving up for one of Epsons large format printers so I can put more lams on a bigger piece of paper. Aloha,Kokua
I have an old epson colour 740 thats held up well but I need to replace it.
I use light lam rice paper taped to a peice of regular paper for stiffness.
the feed rollers on the old printer are way out to the sides so it works. any new printer I have seen feeds way too violentley and the feed roler is just about in the middle and catches the rice paper and causes a jam.
any suggestions for a replacement? different type of paper etc…?
cheers
I’ve done one job with the kid’s inkjet, and had to try three times to get it to work. The paper had been rolled up and didn’t want to lay flat, so I ironed it a bunch of times.
Light paper may benefit from some spray starch (water soluble) and ironing to get and keep the creases and tendency to bend, out.
I thought that you could only use waterbased ink on rice paper or else when you laminate the board the inks (with normal printer ink) will start to run…is this true??
Howzit oaktown, Look into the Epson C-86, They are inexpensive and use the Durabrite archival ink which is water proof and UV resistant. I use a thicker rice paper and it runs through the printer with no problems. I cut a lot of paper off a roll and then press it between 2 pieces of cardboard with a couple of books on top to flatten. Don’t have to paste it to another sheet of paper either. I have the C-82 model and every upgrade they do they raise the model number so the C-86 is probably way better than my C-82. I had a C-80 first but there was an issue with them leaking ink and clogged jets which ended up ruining the printer. plus I was always having to clean the jets. I’ve had this C-82 for over a year and have only had to clean the jets 1 time so they made improvements. I usually do about 200 lams a month for the shapers here on Kauai. One thing I like is I order ink from Dell, since they sell it cheaper than any body and if you buy during some of their promotions you get a discount and free shipping, kinda hard to beat. Sometimes you can even get a discount on the printer from Dell plus a rebate from Epson and the free shipping, just check their site weekly for promotions. Aloha,Kokua
