Well today I went down to Michael’s (big craft store) looking for rice paper. Asked an employee there and she didn’t know what exactly it was and we couldn’t find it. Is rice paper the same as tracing paper? I’ve never used rice paper before, or know exactly what it looks like. All the talk about using it for lams made me interested and i wanted to try it. Where can I get rice paper?
Howzit strndedsurfr, Actually if the board is clear you can use tracing paper. Bill Hamilton used to play around doing it with tracing paper until I turned him on to a rice paper supply. If the board is painted don’t use tracing paper since the paper will not turn clear when you lam it. This is the rice paper I use, this is wrapped around the paper and sealed with in cellophane, sorry it’s in Japanese and the pic is upside down. The rolls are 11" wide and you can get about 80 sheets 8 1/2" by 11" and it costs about $ 10.00 a roll. Aloha,Kokua
If you live in the San Diego area, you can buy sheets at Mitch’s. It’s not the same as tracing paper.
Maybe someone has an online source. Doug
Easy to buy online from surfboard supply outlets.
Fiberglass Hawaii (Santa Cruz)
FoamEZ, Fiberglass Supply and Surf Source (Fla.)(www.surfsource.net, 8.5"x12" cost $0.40 ea., works in your inkjet printer)
Other sources outside the boardbuilding arena are model airplane builders supply, not used much any more but is called Silkspan in the catalogs.

I like to use the thicker stuff that holds a lot of ink which make lams that look like silkscreened ones. I put these on opaque pigmented boards, so I use a border and paint the back white. You can get it from: Yasutomo & Co. 490 Eccies Ave, San Francisco, CA 94080. #6-H, 9x12" sheets. Print it on the smooth side of the paper.
Howzit Pete, The paper I use is the thick type which you can run through you printer with out having to tape it to a sheet of paper. I do a lot of lams for other shapers so at 12 1/2 cents a page it is by far a good deal. Of course somebody has to cut the paper, but that's what idle hands are for. Aloha,Kokua
they do sell rice paper at Michaels, its in the calligraphy section and comes in rolls. (Not a big seller, apparently, because it’s usually down on a shelf near the floor!) OR you can buy it at Mitch’s, but the rolls are a lot cheaper.
I am also looking to get rice paper.I know a art teacher where I work that will get me the rice paper, but she also asked me to let her know what weight and texture i want. Can anyone provide me with this imformation. thanks
Hi Kokua, I went through a million types of rice paper before I found this stuff. Got it at a Japanese calligraphy store in LA. It helped alot to bring someone who can read Japanese to understand all of the grades. Some stuff was so thick it had fibers on the back and looked like mat cloth. I use a paper cutter to cut multiple sheets at once. Send me a PM and I’ll mail you a sheet to try if you like.
When I used to live in Japan I used to pick a package up for 100 yen at the 100 yen store, about 90 cents at that time. It must of had 50 sheets in the pack. The 100 yen store is the same as the dollar store here. Hummmm, 40 cents x 50. Good profit margin.
