I noted when we were down in San Diego glassing that your ricepaper is a lot denser than the stuff I use. I went to the artstore and found some stuff that looked similar (and a LOT cheaper). It prints great, but doesn’t wetout clear. What brand are you (or anyone else) using?
I use the really thin stuff for screenprinting, plus we also inkjet out some of the smaller guys lams on the same stuff,
I personally dont like the thicker stuff because sometimes you can feel it under the glass,
If your printing on your inkjet you are probably using paper as backing,
Use transparencies, they dont absorb ink like paper so more stays in the rice paper, they come off more vivid, We use screenprinters shirt adhesive to hold the paper on the transparancies, it works great since its meant to hold and not stick or bond, a light spray will hold several runs through the printer, ALso here is something really cool for the inkjet guys, I got a sample of a WHITE rice paper that obviously wont turn clear but it puts a solid background so you dont get the washed out look on color. Obviously youd have to cut your logos exact but it looks really good. more like screened
Yea… I use the really thin stuff too. It works good, as far as transparency, but lacks definition. I didn’t really care, thinking it’s better than nothing, until I saw one of Keith’s. It almost looks like normal paper, but it dissapeared completely, and the detail that he could get was exceptional.
I was thinking of using this non-dissapearing stuff for the opaque’s, maybe use that white spraypaint on the back trick. I just don’t like making geometrical logos…
Where can I get some of this opaque (white) paper? I use a fairly heavy type now, which gives me exceptional detail and color. Since almost all of my boards are opaque colors, I have to spray the back white. On clear lams it’s invisible. This paper will do photos also extremely well and goes through the printer without any backing sheet. The guy I get it from refuses to tell me where to buy it, but he’ll sell it for .50 per 8.5 x 11 sheet (it comes on a roll). That’s cheap enough, but the guy is a jerk and I’d like another source.
Hey guys - I am out of town at the moment (my dad passed away recently) so can’t check on the details right now. Will get back to you this weekend… my recollection is that it’s rice paper used for calligraphy, but not sure of the brand/manufacturer, check in the calligraphy section of a good art store. Yes, it came on a roll… the lighter stuff i also use comes in oversized sheets.
Aloha,
Keith
Hey rKelly-
I use the same stuff as Keith I believe, and I get it on a roll at Mitch’s. It seems to be fairly thick, but completely dissappears under the glass/resin and you can get amazing detail. I have a whole roll. If you want me to send you a couple pieces to try out, PM me an address.
Sounds interesting. Do you have a brand name for it??
I do not…sorry. When I first used it, I thought “There’s no way this stuff is going to soak through and totally dissappear…”, but it did. Good stuff.
Hey Tenover…
thanks for the offer, I forgot that Keith said he got it from Mitch’s. I can just swing by there next time I go down to SD.
That stuff is 3 times as dense as the paper I get, the detail looked incredible… there’s no point to using that thin stuff.
Hi Keith
I use the standard rice paper you get from the art store. I is much cheaper and come in roles. It also has the benifit of passing through a buble jet printer without having to stick it to some other paper. On the issue of it not soaking through and bonding to the foam. l lay down the cloth and cut it out. Then fold it back and put down a layer of resin where I want the logo to go. Lay down the logo in the correct position and then fold the cloth back over the logo and procceed to do normal glassing. This method works well for me
ok, the latest stuff I bought is branded Loew & Cornell, Inc., Teaneck New Jersey, product # P-903, “Oriental Rice Paper for Sumi, Calligraphy, Water Color & Sketching” 12" x 50 foot roll, made in Taiwan (I saved the label!)
My recollection is that this roll cost somewhere around $10 and that I bought it at an art store.
I use the same method as swifty to make sure it wets out…
Awesome! I found that same stuff a few months ago online, but wasn’t sure if it was too thick to get it clear. Sounds like a winner.
Awesome Keith, thanks… I’ll re-check Pearl to see if they have it.
Sorry to hear about your loss, best wishes.
