Ride em till they die

Ride em till they die. Found this one at the local ding repair shop, Coconut Petes, in Point Loma. The original LokBox’s help date it. 8’10" King Fish.

Are the glassed-on front fins standard issue on your Kingfish models or an add-on made by the previous owner Ace?

When you see a board ridden to death like that it is proof that it was a good board.

The front runner fins were “standard issue” on my Six Shooters. I used to get the "Wow got enough fins"all the time but they sure rode good. Selling em in a conservative surf shop like Souuth Coast was a little tough.

 Cheers Ace. That’s some good advertising for you as a shaper who knows what they’re doing, if they had to perform well enough to overcome the reluctance of a conservative customer in order to sell, and managed to do so.

Yep. But I’m not quite sure about the part of it being “dead” yet. If it were, I’m guessing it’d be in a landfill, rather than in a ding repair shop. So in spite of all the discolouration, the general wear and tear, the fairly major repairs to the nose and tail, and I suspect a snap in the mid-section, I think there’s a decent chance someone thinks enough of this board to one day try to resurrect it.

Which is an even better bit of advertising for you Ace.

Cheers all!

that is so cool!  kudos Ace

always enjoy your posts Ace… sure wish you might give us a small taste of anything you are currently shaping

this board reminds of the board I learned on… a friend’s beater single fin, bondo for ding repairs all over it… still rideable and we were just kids (maybe 10 yrs old)… the days when your Mom would drop you off at the pier w the board and tell you “be right here at 4pm” and we would have the entire day (no cell phones, no check in w Mom… seatbelts… who needed seat belts?)… just be right here at 4pm… and we were… mom might throw two or three bucks at you for pocket change on the way out the car… and somehow no harm came to us during our 6-8 hr day playing/surfing at the pier…can anyone say 1980? 82?  if that… a very regular occurrence actually.

anyway, this post brought back a nice little flashback on some great memories…

thanks

Warren

Spending all day at the beach no cares no worries life would never be better. I am working on a special project at the moment I will be posting pictures soon. For real with real pictures. I love it when some board I made 25-30 and older, years ago is paraded by me at the beach battle scarred and brown. Most of the time the rider is younger than the board. They usualy do not know who I am or that I made the board. Thats OK becuase for me the stoke is seeing the board still going.

Lankameese’s post brought back memories.

Born to Be Wild, a song written by Mars Bonfire (Steppenwolf) about his first car, a Ford Falcon.  I was 16.  My Dad said if I brought my history class grade up to a C, he would give me the keys to the family station wagon (remember those) or the VW Bug to go surfing – solo (no parental co-pilot), no distance limit and no questions asked (1969).  Got the C average after a few months.  Racked up the boards, made a PBJ sandwich for later, left at dawn and returned at sunset.  Born to be wild…

Sorry for the digression Ace.

Those were truly were the days.

Ace will probably confirm this but the front runners are not glassed on in this case.  I know PSG used to route a slot and insert fins like these into the board about 1" deep.  I believe they were “glued” in place with epoxy.  A quick way to instal small fins that don’t have much torque.  Keeps the sanders happy haha.  Probably not the best way to go but definitley quicker instal.

Epoxy glues did not work as good as poly resin. We used hot glue on the “plastic” Bonzer fins. Worked pretty good once you got  it down. All the Bonzers we made were routed in. Some guys prefered glass on runners…I will be providing a updated “Bonzer” build soon. First one in a long time.

Ace there isan 8 foot six shooter for sale on Criagslist in Jacksonville Florida.  It’s tempting me. Need to sell a Board first.  and it is a long drive up there from my location. Looking forword to seeing your new project and Bonzer.
