The “Early” ones had the “D” style fins like in Matt’s pic. The ones shaped in the 90’s during the Stewart/Hobie/Ron House era Fins Unlimited boxes. I rode mine quite alot and still have it. If you want a good riding “speed shape” longboard; ditch the D style fin. I used a Calif. “Raked” 9 or even 8 inch. Much more responsive for turns and cutbacks at speed. If you’re shaping a "wall hanger; Go with the classic “Rising Sun” or plain mahogany D fin. Lowel
When the time is right, consult with me about your fin selection. I have considerable experience with that board design. In 1960 I had the good fortune to have about an hour conversation with Phil, about his board and fin designs. It was the most mind opening experience, as it relates to surfboard designs/science, that I’ve ever had. To this day I refer to it as my Phil Edwards Surfboard Tutorial.
I have a custom reissue that was built when he started doing them again. I asked for one of the wooden glass-on reverse template fins. It rides nice but is a glider, not a ‘high performance’ longboard. It doesn’t have a finbox so I can’t say how it would ride with a different fin.
You can definitely put your trust in Bill’s judgement. He is a deep well.
