Ripped my Leash

Through the tail of my board. The Leash plug is still in there, and isnt loose. Can anyone explain how to repair something like this? Or maybe link me to a site that does. I dont have the money right now to go and get this fixed, so i have to do it myself.

Thanks alot guys

anybody?

Sounds like you’ve not done this before, so here’s the easy way - buy a tube of Solar-Rez, put the board in the shade, fill the hole with it, cover with plastic wrap, pull the plastic tight & flat, secure with masking tape (pulling in all directions), and place in the sun. If you use the right amount you’ll hardly have to sand at all; if you use too much resin you’ll have to sand a lot…

The more sophisticated methods are in the archives, just search under ding repair.

That’s a bad one…

No photos, but I’ve seen/had one of those before. First thing to do in fixing it is never rely on your leash…on no…wait…that’s how you make sure it never happens again.

Chances are you’re going to have to taper back the glass in the dinged area, remove any damaged foam, patch in some new foam cut to shape and then glass patch it back up.

Fit the new foam in the hole and glue it with some gorilla glue, sand it back down so that it’s flush. Get yourself some uv repair resin; cut some patches that will exceed the size of the hole you’ve just filled by about 2 inches around the periphery to insure good mechanical bonding; lam them on after you’ve roughed up the glass surrounding the hole. Hotcoat and sand it fair to the rest of the board. Done.

Do yourself a favour and while you’re at it, run the patch all the way around your tail after roughing up and cleaning the surface you’ll be lamming to. That way the next time you abandon your board in heavy surf, chances are it won’t rip through somewhere else in the tail…

good luck!

No biggie to fix, really. You need resin ( preferably the type that uses catalyst ), either filler powder or sprayable urethane foam , some masking tape, fiberglass cloth, sandpaper, a throw-away brush and patience.

First off, remove the wax in the area and tape over the deck side of the munch. With the board upside down, fill through the bottom side, when it has hardened, remove tape, sand as need be. Glass cloth over the sanded area, squeegeed ( a piece of cardboard will do) to remove the excess resin, sand the edges and then paint resin over it to give a combined hotcoat/gloss.

or, if you prefer ( from the uncle doc archives )

damn - forgot I had that last one…

hope that’s of use

doc…

hmm i think i could handle that, would the “ding all” stuff they sell in surf shops work? ive fixed tons of dings through the years, but none of them have been as bad as this. also, i have never used anything but that sun cure crap.

yep, everything you need should be in a standard ‘ding repair kit’, give or take masking tape and a 79 cent ‘chip brush’. Hint, go light on the catalyst for the filler, as otherwise it’ll heat up, overheat and crack.

hope that’s of use

no rail saver on the leash!!!

Same thing happened to me awhile back. Check out my first post here. Good luck on your repair. Make sure to keep that rail saver tight and don’t leave the rope exposed. As you can see I learned the hard way.

i have one, but the wave was so powerful it streched out the rope so far that it ripped right through the tail.
