hey this a bit off topic but i am board me and a couple of mate did a road trip down to gisbone on thursday for a few days last week, we got some good waves and were in the water almost the whole time we were there. But on the way down i was going though the gorge on the way into gisbone and came around a blind corner and came across about 15 rocks the size the size of big soccer balls needless to say we hit at least 3 of them.It was 100am in the morning, raining and we set all the air bags of in the car!!!!. luckly when the smoke from the air bags we were all ok. we blew a tyre and dented the living daylight out of the bottom of the car. Then found out that we had a spare but not tools to get the wheel off!!! we may have had some but 7 surfboards tents and all our gear stuffed in the car made it impossable to find in the rain
by a stroke of luck some one else was on the road at 130am and stopped and gave us a hand. we slowly drove ( limped) the car the 1hr drive into town now its 230 we got 3 hours sleep and were up for a coffee and a dawn surf!! and tested out the new board i shaped
anyway so now my car is in the panels shop and they tell me its most likely a right off.
but what can you say we got a few great days in surfing and that is what its all about, funny the wife did not see it the same way!!!
so any you guys got a story like that i am sure i am not the only one
Sure. We lucked in some nice Seconds at Whiterock. Got the evening glass off and surfed to dark. On the drive out we had to pick our way through some rocks and a real boggy patch. Just as I was about to say to my mate 'don't go through there we'll get stuck', he floored it and we were buried to the axles in mud and water.
Took us about an hour to push it out to solid ground. So we've driving through the windy, narrow, hilly, metal road in the dark, recalling bad luck driving stories while in surf trips. One story involved crashing into a cow. Then all of a sudden this sheep runs down the hill and SMACK!! into the front of the car. The sheep cartwheels down the road and comes to a rest ten metres or so in front of our now stopped car.
So we're sitting in the car, silent, the sheep is lying still in the middle of the metal road, with our headlights shining on. It seems to still be breathing and we can see some blood on it. Well, we think its f#@$%d and we're gonna have to finish it off. So we sit there for about five minutes discussing how we're gonna dispatch this creature. We all open the doors at the same time and step out to put it out of its misery, when it jumps up and sprints down the hill away from us. It was like some horror comedy!
The rest of the trip home was uneventful but we still laugh about that one. And the waves were good too.
I used to live in Gizzy! I am going to move back someday, just got to get a job over there. I wish they would give temp work status to shapers. I am actually a boat captain so hope fully one day i will be back there or Kaikoura.
