Rolf Aurness

anyone know where to find vid clips or clip of Rolf Aurness back in his heyday?? I searched youtube and i googled… but no clip of him.

Thx,

jason

Was it morning of the earth he was in?

Hey 9N78W…

I’ve seen footage of the 1970 World title competion in Johanna, the one which Aurness won. (And Reno in his flares wetsuit…)

I’ll wrack my brains for a bit to see if I can remember where, but its def. not Morning of the Earth…If I can’t and I forget, no big deal.

Josh

I think there might be a psychadelic sequence of him in Pacific Vibrations.

OK I got it…

Its in “Nat Young’s History of Surfing, the movie…”

The context it relates to is the boards…the aussies where on these ridiculously short “Post-shortboard Revolution” stubby things, and Aurness took ‘em apart on a “real” board, a pintail, back around the 7’ mark, handling the juice better.

If I’m wrong, my memory is being cruel…

Josh

Josh, you’re right.

There was also a doco made about that world titles that got a re-release a couple of years ago.

Can’t remember the name but it’s a classic time capsule of that very colourful and creative time.

there might be some footage in one of Paul Witzigs trilogy from that era (Evolution, Sea of Joy or damm, can’t remember)

try witzigfilms.com.au.

Good luck.

Steve

Phew,

Hey Steve, I’m glad I’m right…

Nats parting line of narration on the topic of Aurness was “…he disappeared into obscurity, went home to the Ranch, became a goofy footer and got good all over again…” (or some such…) which only added to the mystique of the man for a then-grommie…

Josh

Hal Jepsen: “The Cosmic Children” shows a contest at Malibu, Rolf on his eggy shortboard, I think it was Bing’s Maui Foil. Also in the film is a bit of Dora, Johnny Fain, David Nuuhiwa, Barry Kanaiapuni, Owl Chapman, and the incomparable J. Riddle.

A great film: illilict soundtrack (Stones, etc. used w/out permission) - it really evokes the era.

There’s a really nice profile of Rolf in a Surfer’s Journal from a while back. I’m thinking Drew Kampion wrote it, also appears in his book “The Way of the Surfer”.

Aurness was one of the transition era/shortboard revolution greats.

There is some footage of Rolf Aurness taken during the '70 World Contest in Australia in “Sea of Joy”, drawing some clean, lines across the Johanna walls. My only Rolf sighting occured one winter afternoon, '70 or '71, when I saw him and a pretty asian girl walking through Ehukai Beach park, carrying a rather long (maybe 7 foot or so) black and white Bing twin fin. Pipe was like 4-6ft with only three guys out and he went out and did his thing. Great article on him in the Surfers Journal too.

OMG…!!!

For interest sake I just Googled Rolf…and found out about his latest attempt to re-emerge as a board label…

“BUTT JUICE” surfboards???

Can somebody please explain…I have just been traumatised. I mean, WTF is that about!!!

Josh

yeah, thanks fellas. i heard about him in some of those flicks ( sea of joy - pac vibes), but any hints as to where i can check him out online. ( a clip of him surfing, that is … don’t find on youtube and google results either )

Here’s what Butt Juice Surfboards are (were?) about :

Rolf Aurness concept is to get the board to plane solely on

one of the lateral wing so that you can such a speed that

you can go through fast sections you wouldn’t normally be

able to make. Board has parralel fins, flat tail rocker and a

deep channel all along.

Thanks Pierre,

I’m sure you can agree that the interesting board design still does’nt explain that absolutely wrong name!!!

That label would never take to the market…unless Rolf was going for the pink community?

I’m still mystified, but whatever!

Josh

I agree Josh. Let’s just cut right to the real name here … anal leakage surfboards.

Wow. The cross sections look almost exactly like the fat penguin…
