been looking at JS industries range of boards. I like the look of the 'prodigy' model he has on his website...
but I want to pose this question...
I like the dims of the 6'4" X 20" X 2 5/8" coming in at 34 litres sounds good.
My question is....How is the rounded tail on this board going to perform, compared to if it had a rounded/squashed square or swallow tail (both of which I normally ride).
I really like the outline with the rounded tail, and I am thinking about including this board in my quiver to take on a tropical surf trip next year. On this trip (have been before) we dont search out the screaming double over head freight train barrels, more so head high to just over head high tropical waves, with the odd barrell thrown in!

Thoughts?

Yes. Pick up an extra ticket, please. When are we going?
Don't listen to huck. Buy ME a ticket, and i'll tell you when we've surfed for a few days in those fun sounding waves!. Rund tail smooth turns. Maybe less drive, but if the waves have push then no worries.
yeh yeh....scraping the cash for my ticket first! ha
its the ments, no massive secret there! but we did find some great fun waves last time, that werent tooooo heavy, just super fun, although still managed a few scrapes!
yeh, was thinking the rounder tail would draw turns out a bit more...less twitchy for tighter turns in the pocket???
as for drive, I guess a little of the lost surface area, compared to say a squashed square, would reduce drive?? although steeper reefy waves should compensate this out???
keen to hear more...
I really like the outline, looks kinda curvy.....I imagine on a slick, glassy early morning wall would combine quite nicely!!
That looks like a sick board! Way to much money for me tho, so gotta build my own. Just finishing up the template for a board which looks very similar to the JS "Prodigy" your looking at. 6'4"x 15"x 20"x 12 3/4" x 2.5" . Wasn't planning on putting a 5fin setup in, just the standard thrusters. Any ideas on performance of a quad vs. thrusther setup on the "Prodigy" or a similar round pintail?
Did a quiver for 5 guys (myself included) a couple of years ago for a Ments trip. The thumbs in the sizes you are looking at got ridden the most, the conventional rounded squares & swallows stayed mostly in the rack. The rounded pins came out when it was over XX. George Gall gave me a lot of pointers for the shapes. A thumb gives a little more push when paddling to drop in. Holds fine in the barrel. Fin selection is important too. Hope this helps!
would love to see a photo of the outline when its done, I was wondering about tail and nose dims (yes I am shaping this myself too...I could make three of them for that price!!)
hey surfteach...
interesting about the thumbs being preferred over the sqaures/swallows. For some reason the rounded tail shape really gets my flow going as opposed to the more abrupt shapes of the square and swallow?! When you say 'when it was over XX'...assuming you mean overhead?
Hey Saltbush, I’m no expert, but I’ve been riding rounded pins almost exclusively for the past 5 years (partly by choice, partly because I can’t afford to buy anything new). I grew up surfing long walling right-hand points and I’ve found that the extra rail on that style of board really helps with that kind of down-the-line surfing. And, as you pointed out, it helps to stabilise those big drawn-out power turns.
Hey saltbush, here's a pic of that board im workn on. Just got done truing up the outline on the blank. 6'4" x 12 3/4N x 20 x 15T x 2.5". Hoping it'll be my go-to winter board ( bigger, steeper waves), and maybe a travel board if it turns out alright.
Nice looking board sparky. I have one very similar (only 6’5" and a bit narrower around the middle) that I had custom-built before my shaping days. Was great in anything up to 8’ (and probably over, I just haven’t had the chance to try it out).
Sparky....sick outline!! Thats pretty much exactly what I'm looking for I reckon! Thanks heaps for those dims on the nose and tail, dont mind if i poach them do ya!?
I think will stay with the 2 1/2" thick as well, i've snuck my standard 6'6" out to 2 5/8" - 2 3/4" and Im finding my surfing has lost a bit of zip....I never thought Id say it, but maybe the extra weight??
I have also carried foam a little forward for paddle-ability....thus I think, reducing performance a little...and I'm not 100% convinced that I have increased paddle-ability anyways??!
CASS...nice web/blog page....I'd like to get one of these going as I am selling a few boards here and there and to have somewhere to direct people to have a look at my boards, without having a full blown expensive website would be ideal!
I'll pm you with some questions about setting it up!!
