On all my boards (9’4") and over, I’ve had square tails. They nose ride great, but what are the differences between a square tail and a rounded pin, which seems to be the only other predominate tail shape you see on nose riders? Say you had two boards, both 9’8" with 50/50 rails all the way down, flat bottom all the way…What would the difference be? Would the pin just hold better in steeper sections and not want to spin out as easily, or…??? Thanks. I’m just trying to build my next board in my head while I wait for some $$$ to roll in.
…That’s just your Oklahoma attitude…everyone knows that a pintail will hang better in a steep section.

My favorites have always been pintails, but my next board will be a square.

No Herb,
Everyone doesn’t know that a pin tail hangs in better in a steep section. In my experience a square tail is superior, period.
i like big fat fast square tails…so stable you could do jumping jacks on the nose…yeah

Okay Matt, Nice to know!
I ride a square tail as it pivots better however When I was in contact with one of the best Junior Longboarders out there he said that he prefferes pin tails in every condition on every board… so there you have it, if i were to get a custom board I’d go the pin however the round square that i ride know is friggen awesome!
The pin tail will initiate a turn better and will also want to make a longer, drawn out turn. Theoretically, the pin tail will be below the square tail in nose riding because it is pulling against less water in the pocket.

For what it’s worth one of the best noseriders I’ve eve owned was a Bing Noserider round pin. Same reverse rocker as the square but with slightly more kick in the tail with a full round pin. The ride and trim were superb, much more forgiving and wider sweet spot also easier to initiate a turn from the nose. Infact… I think I will order one, now that you got me thinking about mine from years past.
if you’re close to florida, a friend of mine was trying to sell his Bing Noserider Pintail about a month ago…i think he’s still got it.
As much as I would love to have a vintage Bing Nr I think I will go with a modern version. Just abit more tweaked and honed for me. I think even though I have fond memories of the old Bing they were abit more clunky than the modern version.
What’s the condition like? I know a few guys that are into collecting.
I agree that pintails will make you draw out your turns. But on a old style 50/50 railer you want to be able to do pivot turns. I think a square tail will release quicker. I dont have a old school pintail. But I do find all my old school 50/50 railers seem to handle steep take offs and sections. Mainly due to the water sucking around the rails, not so much because they have square tails.platty.
it is the modern bing noserider…custom shaped by matt calvani about a year ago…in PERFECT condition
Big squares noseride better. Round tails have a smoother turning feel. I like the square tail, for sure.
Ben,
Funny or not, it’s the truth. Whether it’s a quote of film dialogue, or someones’ heart felt belief, I have a low tolorance of ignorant statements.
I still have an 8,2 that Jim Phillips made for me. The board is material proof that he really is The Genius (sp?). It has an S-deck. The first 18 inches of nose are 50/50, the next section is standard 60/40, and the back 18 inches are very hard. The tail is a sharp pin, and the nose is rounded in that classic Velzy fasion, not a wide nose by any means, but perfect (not to take anything away from wide noses). It’s so fast. It has volan glassing and a very flat rocker throughout. I am dreaming of when I can have a 9,0 made just like it. Ten more inches will make it a true longboard, but if Jim can duplicate that design, then it’s going to be the best thing going. I don’t know how it will noseride, and don’t care, but it will catch waves early (flat rocker) and accelerate like a rocket. And it will hold steep sections.
Gotta get it done, Jim willing. I think a 9,1Y will be just the ticket.
…Geee,Mr thrilkill…
…I’m sorry,I won’t do that again…
…Naw,I think I’ll throw my food on you now…

…My Index finger is my Gun Control…
Geee Mr. Herb,
You seem to have a thin skin, and are wrong about something else too. “Gun Control” is hitting what you aim at. So, you can safely put your index finger back into your nostril.
…Yeah,Bill,…“in all seriousness”
I'll bet you can out surf and skateboard me too!Herb
…That’s okay, lots of old timers still use them…
Herb,
Who knows, you might be right for a change.
