Roy Stewart and his fantabulous new tunnel fish design fame fame perf ormance and good looking too!

top secret no peeking

Will you be giving riding impressions with and w/o the coffee can aboard?

Kidding!

But seriously…

Interesting, tell us about it.

On your web sight you say “they are a handful on a shortboard” (refering to the Vort-X fins) and that one needs to have more control of their board when it has your fin.

Can you explain the effects of the fin on a short board in a little more detail? From the way I read it, it seems as if the board will be trying to escape from the water. If this is true, what it the benifit? is it soly speed, or manuerverability as well?

you ?

or the board ?

Rhino, you shouldn’t take that website stuff too seriously, it’s hard to make sense when no one is listening except a bunch of trolls and googlebots so all the worst kind of dribble ends up there. . . not saying it isn’t true, just that you can’t trust blokes with marketing hats on

However, to cut a long story short if you point the nose of the board upwards it will attempt to escape from the water as you say, and if you point the nose down, it will attempt to enter the water … . . the trick is to be somewhere in between, which is why some nose rocker is a good idea.

Will report back after launching day, with video, gps reading, and techno report.

Cheers

roy

fame fame ( that’s one for the board and one for myself) plus a good looking two (that’s the board and I again)

Sorry Roy,

Had to peak. From your intro I was hoping to see your tunnel fin on a more traditional wide, split tail shorty. The kind of thing I like to ride. Of course, nothing I’ve seen or read from you would make me think you would do anything ‘traditional’ with the exception of your pioneering self sufficient lifestyle. What are the dimensions of your ‘fish’? Hope the family is healthy. #12? Mike

that’s a psycho fin thingy you got there roytom, i bet it goes insane ?

Hi Rooster, All are well in our camp thankyou. I confess that the ‘fish’ is a 10’9" x 27".

Psycho, we are going to find out as soon as there is swell !

I’m really kinda into the thickness of those fins. How heavy are they? What are they made from?

Hi Mike,

They are lightweight Meranti Marine ply, coated with substantial layers of epoxy and zinc oxide powder (no cloth). They are double foiled, asymmetrically with the outside of the fin being twice as thick as the inside. Two Pieces of ply are glued together, a 14mm thick piece on the outside and a 7mm on the inside . . . I have found that an epoxy glue line right where the trailing edge comes out makes it much easier to foil the trailing edge without it flaking away because the hard epoxy holds a thin edge well. Theoretically the fins are are lined up so that they have no effective toe in and no cant.

Cheers,

Roy

What whould the zinc oxide powder be for?

Also, what is the foil like on your tunnel fin, and is it a perfect 1/2 circle, or more ovalish?

Cheers.

Hi Rhino,

Zinc oxide is a fairing compound (and a pigment)

The tunnel is a half pipe (not oval) and has a 1:18 foil (approx.)

.

Here’s the board with twin fins set in, just with brushed on resin, not polished yet, I thought that it looked quite neat without the tunnel so took a few snaps before installing the tunnel (easiest to install the tunnel after polishing the board.

I would be interested and I think others would in your riding impressions with and without the tunnel fin/hydrofoil effect.

I might hazard a guess that your board would actually tighten up without, as your tail would ride lower, but that’s a guess, and I’m actually interested in what would be the fact.

Its been done before; Early 60’s, Roberts Surf Shop, Marina Del Rey, Ca. Didn’t work then either.
