RR 2000 Change in colour?

G’day all!

Just noticed my latest delivery of Resin Research 2000 resin no longer has that blue tint to it. It’s as clear as the hardener. Initially I thought I may have two lots of hardener mis-labelled, but mixed it goes off.  I’ve no concern structurally, it just struck me as odd. Anyone seen this with the resin?

Cheers,

Marty

RR2000 is clear RR CE2000 has the Uv prohibitor in it, the clear 2000 yellows faster, i think the CE has around 3000 hours  of non yellowing time according to RR.

Doesn’t UV inhibitor actually act as a filter of sorts to stop the foam from yellowing? It was always my understanding that was the case with PE resin. I’ve never used epoxy for surfboards. Does it yellow all by itself?

Yes.

I have an old tarp that I put down when I glass. The old epoxy is yellow.

Interesting! THANKS GUYS!  It’s the same resin I ordered both times (I just checked the old bottles and its just badged up as RR2000).

I did a board with the blue RR2000 and it yellowed after 10 days in Portugal. Not sure if it was the PU foam or the resin…I suspect its the foam because looking at the resin dammed hard rails in the aft 12", it doesnt look any deeper yellow than anywhere else.

Not to worry, it seems structurally fine. I’ll email the supplier and see if they have anything to say. I’ll pass on their comments.

shit goes yellow in the sun man i think its cuz the sun is yellow bro. or really sunny gamma rays and UV radiation makes shit change colour apparently like a tanning room bro. even brown dog shit goes yellow in the sun man crazy shit!!!

Yeah Paul, but how come my under crackers have gone yellow, and they rarely see the sun…well not that often anyway ;o)

…and how come you never find white dog mess these days? I used to find it all the time as a kid.   I blame the hole in the ozone layer turning it all yellow.

A few drops of blue tint per 16oz of mixed resin helps offset the yellowing.

E-mailed the supplier and they got back to me super fast (pretty awesome seeing its a Bank Holiday in Blighty). They said “RR sent the 2000 without the blue additive but we have had it clear like this before and it has been fine…it does not effect the UV without the dye.”

Cool…there we go.

No location in your user profile. I live in California. We use the Resin Research CE resin and the Kwik Kick. It is blue in the bottle.

What you have is the old resin. It is a great product but it will yellow...fast.....Might want to build colored boards with that batch....I could be wrong but I see some BS in the quote you posted from the supplier......

Seabase ran out of blue so they sent you clear.  The clear has been updated and has better uv stability than before.  The blue has some optical enhancement which makes it prettier for showroom boards.  It has also been updated. The blue should be there any time.  I’m sure they just didn’t want you to have to wait.  With PU I always suggest you paint the blank white.  That keeps the foam from yellowing.  Structurally their both the same.

Yo Greg I am using PU blanks. What kind of white paint are you using and how are you applying it?I have a really good spray room with HVLP equipment that I use in my furniture shop. I never thought about painting a blank white before.

This topic probably rivals the china popout debate in terms of sheer wordage…

Water based acrylic is best. Tempera from the craft store is fine.

Do a search for acrylic “futures floor polish” and “paint” for mixing instructions. Watch for posts by Atomized.

Thanks Greg!

There you go, great service from both RR and Seabase! Thanks for the info Mr Loehr!

I'm very happy with my Resin Research supplier....It's a simple phone call for me...Resin in 1-3 days. I'm small time...my supplier runs out of resin from time to time. I will wait for the good stuff.....

I'm so involved with EPS I forgot about painting poly blanks white...good idea...but I'm a backyard airbrusher so most of my boads have some color........have fun!!!!!!

Regarding the painting of blanks white…So why couldn’t I just buy a quart of white water based Kilz primer and spray the blank? I use the shellac based Zissner primer tinted with color all of the time for opaque panels sprayed on the hotcoat and it glosses over like a dream. Not sure how it would work on foam as shellac is not very water resistant. Hell I may try white acrylic lacquer. i love the fast dry times. Any opinions?

I’ve used krylon.  On a PU just about anything works.
