RR Epoxy / Resin Amounts

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a 6’6" 22W 2 3/4"T single fin egg I’m glassing. Its my first time using epoxy,

resin research to be exact. Since I’ve never used epoxy I have a few questions.

I’m planning on a 6+4 deck and 6 bottom. I’m curious how much resin I should order

for this board. Since RR Epoxy is much more costly than others I’d rather not just order

a gallon or two.

Thanks for the help!

Amount guidelines are in there.

Read thouroughly, lots of nuggets throughout, especially if youve never used epoxy.

Get your mix ratios right, are you going to mix by weight or by volume (be aware these are two different ratios)?

In So Cal you can get a one board kit for about $100. Or you can buy the three gallon kit for about $200. Depending on how much resin I waste and how long the boards are and lots of other factors… I normally get 4 boards out of a three gallon kit. I was told by a skilled glasser that you can do 6 short boards with a 3 gallon kit. I use add F too…

How much resin per step on your board??? About 15 ounces… maybe a little more…maybe a little less… Do your first glass job with clear resin. That way if you need a little more Epoxy resin you just mix up more…

I’m with Ray on his amounts. I tried it using the amount according to the link with Greg Loehr’s recommendations and ended up mixing more. Dragging the resin around too much while spreading it causes it to froth and get milky in appearance.

Does anybody else weigh their cloth cut to length (but overlaps not trimmed yet) and multiply X 1.5 or whatever for resin amounts?

Hey John - I don’t do any of that fancy stuff… I mix up about 2oz per foot of board length, and I’m using 6oz glass 2 full layers both sides, with patches set at 45/45 - deck: tail, “belly”(under front foot), nose; bottom: tail, nose.

That is enough to get me started, I don’t work it around much, and I just mix up more smaller batches as I go, my goal is to have less than 2oz of drips on the floor… Have I mentioned I’m cheap? Ha!

Plus, as Ray pointed out, to me, after using polyester, I personally love the way epoxy doesn’t " go off" feels like I have plenty of time to work, and I can add just a little bit on that dry spot on the lap I missed earlier.

J - My offer still stands: If you’re ever down Newport way, feel free to come by and talk story, check out my set up… at least you can see how not to do stuff… Ha!

Thanks for all the help and that link. Pretty sure I’ve got it dialed now.

Where is the best place to get RR Epoxy from?

Taylor - I need to take you up on your offer! I might be down your way in a few weeks, I’ll let

you know!

Hey J - I order mine right from the source. If you “check the archives” I’m sure you’ll find the info, you can also just PM Greg Loher, as he is the man.

Just pm me, and we’ll hook up.
