i reckon 19 is fine for a 5’10. I shaped a 6’2 that was 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 . numbers seem similar to mine.
I would boost the width a bit as well 19.25-19.5 if it was me.
Hey Jaime, I just came across your winter fish. Looks amazing and it got me to relook at my dims before going in. I am using adobe illustrator to get my templates. Not sure if the shaping programs are better but what I realized is that my nose is nearly the same width as my tail in my current template. that 13.75 nose was scued due to not zooming in enough on my program. lines move sometimes…WTF
I noticed on yours, the nose and tail are pretty similar. Im going after a little more performance than what 20.5 can offer me. the rails will be quite knify, single to double concave. Is this a factor???I don’t want an egg…
Thanks and sketched,
Rich
Those numbers look pretty good. If anything, you could go a touch wider (like 19.25 or so). Good move to go with the planer. The sooner you learn to use one, the better.
Thanks Dave. I guess I missed a few numbers on the template. Thanks for the tricks, i guess an oportunity has opened up the use of a planer so it’s time to man up. Super excited about it.
Best,
Rich
Wow jaime, That would be difficult to give feedback on. My bad.
The length is 5’10"
Wide point is 2" up from center at 19"
Nose rocker Is 4 1/2
Tail rocker is 2 1/4
Thanks for your help.
I make a lot of these boards. Your image is missing a few key #s that would allow accurate feedback:
What is the length of the board?
What is the widepoint width?
Nose rocker?
Tail rocker?
The outline looks good to me, I know nothing of the slayer but it looks like very functional board to me
I did my first board with a sureform, I cut channels across the board to nearly full depth at intervals then ‘carefully’ used a saw to cut almost down to the lines at even close intervals then knock these off and save a bit of work (like when checking out a mortise/notch in wood). Didn’t take too long and if it’s a hobby it’s all good as you’re not in rush.
Have fun,
Mick.
Crickets? Please anything would make me feel a bit better. This is going to be my #2 and yes im going through it once again with a sure form. I just finished the dims and will be starting friday. by the looks of things it will be in my living room...
Thanks in advance,
Rich
I want to say thank you to the guys at Acqua Glassing for the help with getting this board shaped. Eric was a huge help and super accomodating. I set out to shape a slayer, but left with a pringle…hahah, I have a lot to learn.
Thanks again.
Thanks for the nice words… If you want to come in for a do over… Its on me…
I heard the board came out pretty decent just thin… If you get everything set you should glass it and sell it… finance your next 2.
That is great advice. I keep picking it up and each time I do It makes me want to surf it. I would be so stoked to do another. That is very generous of you guys to offer that up. I will call you guys in a couple weeks to set it up if that works.
Best,
Rich
No problem… I dont want you to leave the shop putting all that effort in and at the end not quite what you wanted. Bring that board back in and shape it down to a grom board. Keep the center but bring it in and then build your V2.0 Slayer. Practice.
Heres a good overview of the Slayer’s design. He doesn’t hype the Slayer’s performance in barrels as much as he could, but I’m posting this because of this guy’s discussion on the Slayer’s vee. I’ve enjoyed surfing one a few times and the vee’s extension up to almost mid board seems to be what makes this board really work rail to rail. just my oppinion.
Hey guys, I know it’s been a while but I was thinking of getting back in to shape another board. Do you guys still rent the open room with tools etc? My buddy wants to make his first board as well. Let me know know when you can and we will come down when it’s convenient for you. Are there two rooms available? If not we can split the one, but my last board took me about 6 hours. haha
Thanks,
Rich
It’s social suicide to announce to long time forum members and pro shapers that you openly wish to copy someone’s design.
Note for future posting…
I agree Marsh, but really it was just a way to identify the board type/style. My lack of skill would never permit me to rip off somones designs. I made my own templates and rockers etc. i think rustys outline is beautiful, and would hope it would be seen more as admiration and respect than anything else.
Thanks for the advice.
Rich
Nothing wrong with a barrowing some ideas from a master. The Rusty slayer looks like a very funtional board for a great many surfers. One of the things you need to really think about is the choice of blancks to start your project. Since you are working at Agua Glass they should be able to give you sme help with that. In your original post you did not want to go wider then 19" You should rethink that. adding a tad more with would get a curvier outline and that can more then make up for any perceived performance deficit of a wider board. Width and some added volume are your friends
It just takes a little to make a difference. The slayer IMHO is all about that very nice curve in the tail. the rails loo a bit fuller then the average short board The deck has less of a dome. To me those are the key properties of that Board. work with that in mind and you should be able to come close to the desired shape.
Go 19 1/4" @ the narrow, and prob 20 1/8" if I made one of those for me. Nice round pin! It looks a bit like my first board I ever shaped! But I put wide point dead center.
