Ryobi L120-UK planer

 (pic is now mine)

Anybody using these for surfboards? Neighbor brought me one from a secondhand store, seems like it has potential for handle and on-the-fly depth mods. Bearings seem to be in metal cups and the front shoe is still available at Sear’s. Thanks, J

That was my first planer ever, although mine was a Towa. (Towa was later bought by Ryobi). I skinned a lot of boards with it but I cannot say that I really shaped with it.

My first planer ever was a very similar Ryobi.  This pic is from over 20 years ago.  Time flys when you are having fun.

Thanks Guys! I appreciate the input. I have yet to find a manual online. Do you remember the blade sharpening / setting procedure? Thanks, J

Mine came with a sharpening jig that you could screw the plades into and it would hold the angle so as to sharpen both blades evenly.

Thanks Mako. It looks like I have the jigs but I am short the manual, fence, and factory dust adaptor. I also got some pop rivets, a 24mm wrench, and a dust adaptor from something else.

3D milled 3/4" plywood, 6oz cloth and resin, stir stick shims. The hose fits tight when released, comes loose when twisted the right direction.

I just got the blades off and sharpened. Does anyone know how the blade setting jig works on these Towa / Ryobi planers?

Thanks, J

The best part in this thread is the line “my neighbour bought it for me” .
Very lucky to have such neighbour’s !
All mine ever dose is call the council on me.

Yes, they are very nice people.

In the meantime I did the Newleaf faucet-stem depth adjustment:

I brought the front shoe into the machine shop at work and another nice person took .06" (1.6mm) off the bottom for me.

With the blades sharp and the shoe modded I am getting close to 1/8" (3.2mm). It was less than half that before.

I never did figure out the factory blade setting jig.
